Donald Ohlin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 23, 2024.
Donald R. Ohlin, 69, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2023 at his home in Fort Myers, FL, surrounded by his family. Don was born August 13, 1954, in New Castle, PA to George L (Woody) and Justine Ohlin. He was the seventh of ten children and grew up in New Middletown. He graduated from Springfield Local High School in 1972.

Don's initial occupation was carpentry, primarily working with his father in home construction and remodeling. In 1980, Don moved to Florida, where he continued in the building trade for a year, after which he entered into sales. He worked in real estate and later car sales where he enjoyed a successful career. After retirement he became a self-employed house painter.

Those who knew Don know how much he loved Florida! One of his most enjoyable pastimes was going to Fort Myers Beach regularly with family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing the mangroves and bays in the area, grilling his favorite foods outside all year round and enjoying a Budweiser at his favorite bar. Family was always Don's first priority, including his family in Ohio. Don would make the annual trek north every summer to visit. Part of that visit included a trip to the annual Slovene Fest held at the nearby SNPJ, where Don would get his fill of polka music and buy a few CDs for use back home. His other musical favorites included old time rock and roll, with the Beatles being his favorite band. Classic cars were also on Don's list of favorite things. There wasn't a car from the 50's and 60s that he could not identify, just by looking at the taillights! Don very much enjoyed sports, and was supportive of his children's participation when they were younger, never missing a game or event. He was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians and also became a big fan of the Florida Gators, his daughters' alma mater, having attended numerous games (and tailgate parties!).

Don is survived by the former Anne Melville, whom he married in May 1983 in Fort Myers, FL where they settled, raised a family and enjoyed a marriage of over 40 years. In addition to his wife, he will be greatly missed by his three loving children, son Ryan of Ft. Myers, daughters Allison (Rob) Carroll and Lindsey, both of St. Petersburg, FL and beloved grandson, his "little buddy", Jesse.

He is also survived by brothers Douglas, of Fort Myers, FL, Kenneth (Laura) of North Canton, OH, and Michael (Kelly) of Venice, FL and sisters Dianne Wood (Jeff) and Cynthia Bones, both of New Middletown and numerous nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert, Richard and George (Woody) and sister Anita.

The family is planning a memorial mass and private celebration of life at a date to be determined. Please consider a donation for pancreatic cancer research at pancan.org

I´m so glad we got to see cousin Donnie in July at the Slovene Fest. He was always kind and soft spoken, a real gentleman. A good man gone way to soon
