Donald Piana Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 5, 2024.
Donald Joseph Piana was born to Alfred and Josephine Piana in San Francisco, California on April 11th, 1944. He attended Galileo High School, graduated Class of 1962. While there, he found his passion for athletics and music, forming a men's Motown singing troupe.

In 1967, he married the love of his life, Diana Pacchetti and moved to Burlingame. They welcomed the births of their children, Nicole in 1969, and Anthony in 1974. A consummate family man, he never missed any loved one's special moments. From sporting events to art performances, friends and family had the unwavering support of Don.

Don was a passionate Bay Area sports fan, cheering on the Niners, Warriors and Giants every year, even the seasons with more losses than wins. He was an avid golfer, enjoying friendly competition with his children and friends. He was an enthusiastic and supportive ally, but a steadfast opponent, not above playful jabs at less than stellar puts.

Don was a revered soccer coach for decades. In staunch support of equality, he spearheaded the first female soccer program at Burlingame High School in 1984 and continued his backing of Women's Athletics.

Always wanting to give back to the community, he worked for the Palo Alto Parks and Recreation Department for thirty years. The longest and happiest years of his career were as Parks' Superintendent. He played an important role in the organization of many major events at Stanford University, including but not limited to, the Summer Olympics of 1984 and the Annual Senior Games.

It is with great sadness he leaves behind his spouse of 56 years, Diana; his two children, Nicole (Franco) and Anthony (Carrie); his three grandchildren, Libby Godwin (Brian), Emma Massari, and Leo Piana; his nieces and nephews, Lisa Behravesh (Kalon), Ashleigh Karkazis (Sean), Brandon Behravesh (Renee), and Ellie Karkazis.

Don was always up for a challenge. Whether it was trying to golf in a foot of snow, bowling, poker, and always willing to clear a pool table. He loved being in or on the water. I have so many memories of him and whenever we were done he had a huge smile. I miss you so much
