Donald Reid Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 14, 2017.
Don Reid passed away peacefully at the age of 91, on November 13, 2017, at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Born in Superior, Wisconsin, Don was the only son of the late Allan and Jean Reid and grew up in Winnipeg, MB. He will be sadly missed by daughter, Lorabeth Ritch and son-in-law, Murray Ritch; son, Tim and his partner, Cathy Doucet; favourite grandson, Stuart Ritch; sister, Jean Ann Green (Toronto). He was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend of 58 years, Betty-Kay. Don was a graduate of Washington State University and did post graduate work at Michigan State University in Wildlife Biology. Following University, Don worked as a station biologist with the Northeastern Wildlife Station in Fredericton NB. He subsequently made a career switch and moved to Halifax where he worked for 43 years as a financial planner with Investors Group. Although Don had much success during his career with Investors, he was more proud of learning to speak again, with the help of gifted therapists, after a stroke in 1996, which left him without any speech whatsoever. Don was a member of Rockingham United Church where he served as an elder for 10 years during which time he was a representative to Presbytery and he was President of the Halifax Branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association from 1981-1992. An active Mason, he was a long term member of Virgin Lodge, A.F. and A.M. and a Philae Shriner. All his life Don took great pleasure in children, dogs and gardening. Unbeknownst to his own children at the time, for many years Don dressed up as Santa Claus and visited the kids in the neighbourhood before they went to bed on Christmas Eve. With his big booming voice and laugh he was perfect for the part. After Don & Betty Kay sold their home and moved into a condo, Don remarked that "it's a nice enough place but there aren't any kids or dogs." Although he faced significant health challenges for many years which ultimately rendered him bedridden, Don retained his spirit, good nature, and sense of humour. He will be remembered as a gentleman, a devoted husband, a wonderful father and proud grandfather. He brought much love, joy and laughter into our lives. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will held at a later date. The family wishes to thank the staff on Flemming Way at Parkstone for the care and kindness they showed to Don. They also thank Don's friends at Rockingham United Church and First Baptist Church who visited him regularly, brought him his favourite treats, and brightened his days. Donations in Don's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of choice.

A much loved Uncle who will be fondly remembered by both of us - I as his niece of some 65 years and my husband who had the pleasure of knowing him and Betty-Kay when we lived in Ottawa. We never lost touch even after moving to Australia.

We share your sad loss and send our deepest sympathy to Lorabeth, Tim, and your families.

Dear Lorabeth and Tim and families, we were so sorry to hear about the passing of your Father. Jean Ann recounted many stories of their childhood and he was a very special man. Our condolences.

Lorabeth and Tim & Families,

I was so sorry to hear about your wonderful Dad. There was no one with more determination to recover from a severe stroke and still bring so much happiness to others. I know he visited your Mom every day despite his physical limitations and he called all his old friends on their birthdays. I remember how delighted my father was to receive that call.

Your Dad was such a caring father and husband and a terrific neighbour too. We sure had a lot of laughs over the years and I will treasure my last visit with him this past September.

I know that your many cherished memories will help to bring you peace in the days ahead.

With my very deepest sympathy,

Judy

Thinking of a great person who would call Bob and I on our birthdays and singhappy birthday even after regaining his speech. What started as financial planner and customer but became friends. One of Bob's favourite people to meet and talk to. My deepest sympathy, Alecta Jollimore

Dear Lora Beth
I was deeply saddened to hear of your lovely Dad's passing. I got to know Don at Shoppers Drug Mart in Bedford...as you remember I was one of his Pharmacists. Connie and I enjoyed his visits tremendously. Once he taught me a few ballroom steps in the store aisle! It was wonderful to learn that his Dad was also a Pharmacist, and Don liked to tell me about what it was like in the pharmacy as a small boy. We loved his seasonal ties and yes...he came dressed up as Santa a few times at the pharmacy bringing us much joy. When Don moved on to Parkland, Connie and I enjoyed visiting him there...he always made us so welcome and we loved to hear stories of his dog. I have since moved to Ontario, so I am unable to attend Don's church service; however, I did enjoy bringing him with me to my church, First Baptist Church, where your Mom Betty was also a member. He will be greatly missed and I am sure that he definately earned his wings. I hope he will meet my Dad in heaven...they had much in common.
Sending my hugs and prayers,
Karen Leitch-Duggan

Lorabeth and Tim, my deepest sympathies on your loss. I will never forget the early morning drives from Wedgewood to school downtown listening to your father tell stories and jokes ... always the same jokes! Our families had lots of good times

Sad to hear of the passing of my friend and mentor Don, whose words of wisdom guided me in my early years in the financial services industry. We had many a laugh and shared a tear or two. To Lorabeth, Tim and all the Reid family please accept our sincere condolences. Alex and Brenda MacPherson, Antigonish,NS

Lorabeth, Tim And Family, Your dad was a great guy. Always so nice to us kids on the street. That big laugh and playing Santa Claus (with a bag of chocolate bars) at Christmas. I remember when he opened his car door while we were playing road hockey and pulled me in then drove halfway down to your house. Only he could pull that one off. Pete Mac Michael

The best memory that I have of Don is upon my late husbands' birthday (Ed Rubin), Don would always make a phone call and sing "Happy Birthday" to Ed. This was especially poignant after learning how to speak again after his stroke. Ed so appreciated receiving that phone call!
With sincere sympathy , Sue Rubin

My thoughts and prayers are with Don's family. I met Don and Betty-Kay many years ago at Tim Hortons on Langbrae during their weekly Sunday afternoon visits. After a few weeks of saying hi, they asked to join my friends and I and it became a weekly ritual. Although they were my parents age we looked forward to our Sunday meetings . Don was such a gentleman and his love for his wife and family overflowed through his actions and stories. I feel truly blessed to have known them both and remember the first Sunday without Betty-Kay and glad he still came to join us until he was no longer able. Don, may you rest in peace , I know you are smiling being reunited with Betty-Kay. Thank you for your friendship.
