Donald Sharman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 28 to Apr. 29, 2023.
Donald Burton Sharman, age 97, passed away at home, with his family, in Sacramento, California, on February 14, 2023. He was born in San Francisco to Guthrye and Tirzah Sharman on May 24, 1925. A 55-year active resident in Orinda, California, he spent the last 6 years living in Sacramento.

He grew up in San Francisco, and married Lorraine Blinn, his wife of 70 years. They raised 2 sons, Kent, and Bob.

Don served in the US Army during World War 2, stationed in Germany and occupied Austria. Subsequently, he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Don's association with UC Berkeley led to many years of celebrated multi-generational camping at the annual UC Alumni Association Camp Blue. In several generations of his family, he instilled an appreciation for the Sierra and the playground it offers in all seasons. And he was full of passion for his work and had a successful independent engineering firm for decades. Through this, he inspired the next generations in his family with the ability to pursue running one's own business with a focus on ethics and independence.

He remained an active Rotarian in the Orinda Rotary Club for many decades. He and Lorraine were active members for 55 years at St. Stephens Episcopal Church. They valued the deep relationships they developed with both groups.

An internment of his cremains will be at the columbarium at St. Stephens Church, Orinda. His wife, Lorraine, preceded him in death in 2022. He is survived by his sons Kent (Andrea) of Coos Bay, Oregon, and Bob (Wahida) of Sacramento, grandchildren Anya (Win), Claire (April), Casey, Carly, Eric, Azad, and great granddaughter Petra.

It was Exactly 30 years ago on our honeymoon that we got to know each other. We spent a week together on a walking trip on the Milford Trek in New Zealand.
They were very kind to us, even though English we spoke was not such good.
After that, they invited us to stay their home in Orinda with our four children.
You visited our home in Japan also.

More recently, about five years ago, when our oldest daughter studied in the U.S., they took care of her for a while and I went and baked cookies with Lorraine.

It brings back fond memories.
Don & Lorraine, you are our goal!
May they rest in peace.

I am blessed to have known you, however brief. You spoke volumes with only your eyes! The master of "no" equals "yes!" You are missed, Don! Be at peace. Love you! Kim

Dear Sharman family,
some days ago we heard about Ron`s death.
I met him and his wife Lorraine the first time 40 years ago at Upper Yosemite Fall. For such a long time he`s been a friend of us.
I think, he had quite a good relation to my daughter Anna.. Last night she gave birth to our first grandson Janosch.
We join you in your deep sorrow.
Wolfgang, Sabine, Luis and Anna with Simon and Janosch.

I met Don and Lorraine in 1996 on a Canadian Rocky hiking trip.
We hit it off right from the start...thus, I kept in touch the next 25 years. Their love of the outdoors, their love of their family and their love for each other was always evident. I typed up the above two pages as part of a joke one year. I loved to tease them about their oh! so healthy lifestyle. Apparently it paid off in longevity!
