Donald TRAUB Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 23 to Jun. 25, 2017.
TRAUB, Dr. Donald Francis 89, died Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at his home in Tucson, AZ, where he lived since 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Joan Therese (Reynolds). He leaves behind two daughters, Mary Therese Traub, wife of Thomas Carraher, of Las Vegas, NV and Evelyne (Evie) Marie, wife of Gary Conlon of Tucson, AZ; two sons, Edmund Francis Traub, Sr. and Keith Francis Traub, both of Worcester, Massachusetts; three brothers, Edward, Richard and Roy; a sister, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Ashleigh and Patrick Borglund, Donald Francis II, Edmund Francis Jr. and George Traub and Garrett, Caelan and Livia Grace Conlon and five great-grandchildren. Don was born in Wellesley, MA on September 27, 1927 to Margaret Mary (Kingelty) and Edward M. Traub, and grew up in Needham, MA and Tuckahoe, NY. He graduated from Eastchester High School, NY (1944) and enlisted in the Navy. He received his A.B. Degree (1956) in Philosophy from Iona College, and his M.A. (1962), concentration in Philosophy of Science from St. John's University, N.Y. He received an A.M. (1967), and a Ph.D. (1973) in Philosophy was conferred by Boston College. After teaching at Iona College, The College of the Holy Cross, and Anna Marie College, he became a member of the Worcester State College faculty in 1969, where he served as Chairman of the Philosophy Department for ten years, and briefly as Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Don's book, "Toward a Fraternal Society," is referenced in colleges and universities, internationally. Don was a Navy Veteran and "Tin Can Sailor", where he was a Fire Control Specialist (on 40 mm and 5 inch guns) during World War II, on the Destroyers USS Quick and USS Stickell. He was also a Cold War Veteran and recognized as an "Atomic Veteran" for his participation in nuclear testing in the South Pacific. He was a "true Patriot," and was proud to have served our great country, and enjoyed attending Naval Reunions with his wife. Don loved his wife and they enjoyed traveling in their retirement until Joan's death in 2005. Don had a natural magnetism, big smile, wit, intelligence and charm, that made him loved literally by all who met him. A great listener and wise conversationalist, he will leave lasting memories with the many friends he has made through the years. Don was a compassionate and loving father and grandfather, who feel blessed to have had him in their lives. A requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Gianna Oratory at Holy Family Church, 338 W. University Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85705. My deepest sympathy to the family. Dr. Traub was the most important teacher in my life. I had his philosophy class in 1970 at Worcester State where he taught me two very important truths that have guided me throughout my life. First, that there is no love without commitment and second that you must stand up and take action for what you believe. He was a great man and I am so glad that I was lucky enough to have him as a teacher.

To the Traub Family--I had the pleasure of having Dr. Traub for a philosophy professor at Anna Maria College and again at Worcester State. He was a truly outstanding, gentle man of high ideals and dedication to his profession. A true philosopher in every sense of the word. He inspired his students to think and question. He required us to read Viktor Frankl's book Man's Search for Meaning which has guided me in many aspects of my life--including teaching a course on the Holocaust at David Prouty HS Spencer. That book became a staple for my students and inspired them also, in light of many of their own "problems." I used my philosophy classes as a basis for teaching my own students.

All of this because of a truly great man...

I send all of you my condolences--I'm sure he will be missed. But may your wonderful memories of him give you comfort and know how he truly touched hundreds of lives.

Don was one of the great people we're blessed with - he was a giver par excellence, and his Josie de giver will endure in me always. I hadn't seen him in years but I still remember his smile, his lit eyes, and the "stories". He and my Dad would put away a bottle of single malt scotch waxing poetically. They were cut from the same "story" mold. Our deepest condolences to all of Don's family! Linda and Joe Reynolds

I was sad to hear of the death of Dr. Traub, who was my philosophy professor at Anna Maria College. He was a most impressive person - gentle, compassionate, humorous, who radiated a love and appreciation for life. I confided in him during a personal conflict, and I remember well his message: in making a critical decision, just "listen to your heart". I followed his advice then and, in the many years to follow, it remained a guiding principle. His was a life well-lived. My deepest condolences to his family.

On behalf of the Family of John B. Kohler (The Cowboy) we want to send our thoughts to everyone in Don's family. He was a delight whenever we would have dinner with him and all "the gang" at Broadway Proper. Many a Friday night we would sit at the back table (because we were told we laughed too much!!!) and talk about past experiences and all the news of the week. He and my husband Harry would enjoy a little bit of scotch to enhance the meal and conversation. When his daughter Evie hosted my father, Bill McGerry, and all of us over for a joint Birthday it was a night to remember. He was a scholar and a gentlemen. We are so sorry for your loss, but so happy we had the pleasure of knowing Don. Our best regards,
Marilou Kohler Barden and Harry Barden
& All our family.

I am saddened to hear this news. I had Dr. Traub when I was a graduate student at Worcester State and enjoyed and looked forward to each class I had with him. I well remember being in a sweltering classroom with him and the sweat soaking his shirt and running down his face, but he had a huge smile and was totally absorbed and enthusiastic in his philosophical lecture. I feel sorry for students who never had him as a teacher. May your memories see you through this difficult time.
