Don was born Oct. 4, 1939, in Buxton, to Nellie Josephine Ackley. He graduated from Thornton Academy in 1958 as the "class clown." He was a sergeant E5 in the U.S. Army. He started in radio in 1957 while also working on the Dave Astor Show. During his 50-plus years in radio, he co-founded the LOVE Fund, which is a campaign to raise funds for locals in need. To Don Brown's Family,
So sorry we have lost this legend! Use to listen to him all the time. He reminded me so much of Wolfman Jack! I bet Don is spinning the oldies in Heaven. He won't be forgotten!

Don and Rita were our neighbors on Perkins Lane, Hallowell back in the 60's. I even babysat the boys a few times. I followed Don't career at WABK all through school and for as long as I lived in the area. My father, always thought Dona and Rita were great neighbors to have. Don had a special place in my heart. He always cared about me. So sad to hear of his passing, far too soon. My sympathies to his children. He certainly made an impact on a lot us in the Hallowell, Augusta, Gardiner area. He will be missed. God Bless you all. Dena Rowell Profenno

I first knew of Don as a voice on the radio, then as my sister's brother-in-law, then as the man that opened the door that became my radio career. I owe Don so much for everything I learned from him. If there's a rock and roll heaven, Don is playing the music that's making the angel's dance. RIP my friend.

I will miss you, Don. I first met Don on the Dave Astor show in 1959. He was always the class clown even then. I loved his L. L. Bean act of look at the moose and talk into the fishing pole. It was done several times on the hospital show at Gardiner high school.

Don a consistently good man with lots of energy and interests, as well as the capacity to engage and include others. He left the world a better place, for sure. I worked with him on several projects many years ago and on a recent return trip to Maine, he still remembered me.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Don. I listened to him so long, first on WABK, then on 93.5, that I felt that I knew him. In fact, I think he knew me because I called so many times for his radio contests. He also did a lot for the community contributing his time for the cancer walk and every year for the Love Fund. Rest in peace, my friend.

I first listened to Don on the school bus as a freshman in 1970, less than 2 years after WABK 1280 signed on. 32 years later I had the honor and privilege to work with him and occasionally join him on the air. Don loved radio perhaps more than I along with its ability to reach out to those in need of a friend. Farewell Donald and I thank you.

I was an avid listener of Don Brown's on 93.5. I even called in once and had a chance to speak with him. He was one of a kind. I made time to try to listen in to his morning show. As a person "from away" he was Mr. Maine to me. What a great loss to us all! Andy Cook

Working with Don at WABK from 1972-1975 was a time I'll never forget! We always had fun and enjoyed each other's company. The old trailer in Farmindale was cold in the winter, but warm inside because of Don! May all your memories of a true icon help you get through this incredibly difficult time.

An icon of morality for all he met. Every kid in the Gardiner-Augusta area would love to hear his voice early in the morning on a snowy day announcing "no school". A treasure to the community. May God rest his soul and comfort all those who mourn his passing.
