Donna Harkness Obituary

Published by Inside Bay Area on Oct. 13, 2012.
Donna May Harkness Resident of Alameda Donna May Harkness died at home on September 29, 2012 after a long illness. She was 78. She was a resident of Alameda. She was born in Delano, California to Frank and (Lulu) Jean Salsa. Donna received her nursing degree with honors from UCSF. Her 38 year nursing career included working as a school nurse, psychiatric nurse, oncology nurse, home health care and hospice nurse. She was thoughtful, respectful and cared about people. Donna was an accomplished pianist, writer and artist. She enjoyed the beauty of nature and her love of flowers was reflected in her artwork. She cherished the outdoors and spent time hiking, biking, camping, swimming and traveling. She was a voracious reader and made good use of her library card. She was a member of Mensa, Sierra Club, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and was a long time supporter of the Oakland Museum. Donna was an advocate for justice, tolerance and fairness. She was very generous and kind. Donna is survived by her three children: Roderick Harkness and his wife, Stella; David Harkness and his wife, Susan; Jennifer Thompson and her husband, Jim; her granddaughter, Melinda (Mindy); her 2 sisters: Louetta Erlin and Linda Nunes. At her request, there will be no memorial service. Donna believed that life lived fully, on a day-to-day basis, is the memorial we all leave. Donations may be made in her memory to Children's Hospital: Oakland or Mother's Against Drunk Driving.

Mom had special qualities, a beautiful soul indeed! She taught us to be compassionate, kind & generous. Mom would often remind us "Each day is precious, isn't it? Have you counted the beautiful things you have seen and heard today?". She saw Beauty in life and would often share them with us, uplifting our spirits. It's truly a blessing to have Donna as our mom, for she has taught us well. She is our Bright, Shining Angel and will remain in our hearts forever. We love and miss you so much, Mom!

DONNA, YOU'VE DONE GOOD. YOU RAISED THE BEST KIDS. YOU INSPIRED US BY EXAMPLE. YOU ALWAYS HAD A SMILE FOR US, THE KIND OF SMILE THAT MADE US FEEL GOOD THE REST OF THE DAY.
A WONDERFUL LIFE, A WONDERFUL FAMILY, YOU ARE LOVED.

When the heart grieves over what is has lost, the spirit rejoices over what it has left.

With caring thoughts, GEPPETTO

Mom,
We could never express the depth of your impact on our lives and the beautiful example that you set for us everyday without wishing to take credit for doing so. You had a gentle spirit, but you were also the strongest, most tenacious person that we knew. We take comfort that you are watching over us and that the love that we all feel for you will never wane. Love, David, Susan and Mindy
