Donna 'Jean' Rice

(Donna) Jean Rice was born March 4, 1931 in Spokane, to Richard and Louise Stephens. Jean passed away Dec. 22, 2017. She was an only child. Jean was very active in school and loved to sing and take part in school activities. She went on to train professionally in voice and performed at many weddings and even some opera in Spokane. Jean married Everett Eggers, a widower and brought two daughters, Shan and Lynn, and a son, Kim, to the marriage. Jean and Ev had two children of their own - a son, Kris and a daughter, Lori. Jean and Ev were divorced after 15 years of marriage. Jean worked tirelessly as a single mom to keep the bills paid and provide a healthy and happy home for her kids. Jean married Harry Rice in 1966. Harry had a son, Marty, and a daughter, Cheryl, and the four younger kids became close and generated many happy memories. The family moved to Portland in 1968 so Harry could take a new job. In Portland, Jean worked as a volunteer at St. Vincent's hospital for many years. She was also a campfire leader for several years. As Harry became more successful at work, he and Jean began to travel all over the world. They toured Europe, Scandinavia, New Zealand and Australia.
When Harry retired, he and Jean moved to Claremont senior living community. They relocated to Gearhart for a few years and then moved back to the Garden Home area. Finally, they moved to The Springs where they made many new friends and thoroughly enjoyed their new environment. Harry passed away in the fall of 2013. Jean is survived by all seven of her children; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Jean Rice was a force of nature. She lived life fully and taught us all the importance of laughter. She will be missed. The family would like to especially thank the staff at The Springs at Tanasbourne and Providence Hospice for the excellent and compassionate care they provided to Mom in her final years.
A Memorial for Jean will take place at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, at The Springs.
