Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.

Joe Szymanowicz lost his battle with cancer on August 5, 2014, at the young age of 76. He was born in Erie on November 15, 1937, a son of the late Leo and Helen Szymanowicz.

He attended Cathedral Prep, and graduated from Gannon University. Joe and his wife Fran were second generation owners of the Glass House Inn.

Joe had many passions. His most treasured one was his wife of 54 years Fran Hitz Szymanowicz, followed closely by his love of flight, as an accomplished private pilot for many years. His passion of flying went from the air to the ground, with his creation of White Eagle Industries, an airplane supply company. Joe's other interests included collecting reel to reel old time radio shows, hunting with his brother, Leon, and fixing anything and everything, from automobiles to airplane engines. He would often share his knowledge with friends from all over the world, as an amateur radio operator (WA3GJH).

His third and final passion was his family from his daughters: Laura Merryman, Jane Pontore, and Darcy Woodward, to the sons he never had: sons-in-law Tim, Michael, and Brian, ending with his eight grandchildren. He is further survived by a brother, Dr. Leon Sims and his wife Jeanne, and a sister, Wanda Roth and her husband Don.

Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 W. 26th Street (at Powell Ave.), on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and are invited to attend a service there on Friday at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Casimir Wozniak officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department Inc., 7455 New Rd., Edinboro, PA 16412, or to Edinboro-McKean VFW Post 740, 10613 Route 98, Edinboro, PA 16412.

On August 5th I lost a cousin. Actually Joe married my cousin Fran Hitz 54 years ago but I always considered Joe my cousin. I first met Joe when he was dating Fran. They came to a family outing. Joe was so tall and handsome he made quite an entrance. I am fourteen years younger but I had such a crush on him. He laughed when I told him about it decades later.
When Fran and Joe got married it was the first wedding I ever attended. It was magical. It was my first time at the Sunset Inn and I remember the beautiful wedding cake and trays of Polish bow cookies (chrusciki). The Polka music made for the festivities and Joe could really polka! They made the perfect couple. I wanted to believe their daughter Jane was named after me. Joe told me I could believe whatever I wanted. His sense of humor, smile and sparkle in his eyes were always welcoming.
Fast forward to the 1990's and Fran and Joe hosted the Hitz family reunion at their lovely home. It would be the last reunion for that side of the family. Joe took me up in his Stearman bi-wing airplane. All I needed was goggles and a white satin scarf! It was an amazing experience.
The last time I visited was years ago. I stopped in at lunch time as I was traveling for work and was in the area. Fran was making cold meat loaf sandwiches. I sat down and Joe got up to get a bottle of cream soda, his favorite. He offered to share one with me but said he had to have Frito's on the side. So there I am looking at a meatloaf sandwich, glass of cream soda and Frito's. None of this goes together but every time I would see cream soda or Frito's I would think of Joe.
So my dear Joe, may you rest in peace. Tonight I am going to have a cream soda and Frito's and toast the wonderful man I came to know and love.
Fran, Laura, Jane and Darcy I am so sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was a warm, loving gentleman. Take comfort in knowing he is with many of his "pilot' friends, like my late father-in-law, Steve Chivari, and his son, Steve, my husband. Along with Mike Surovick and, many others. Let the loving memories that were created with him, sustain you in the years ahead.
Sincerely,

Bill Arkwright

Deepest sympathy to everyone on the loss of the most wonderful man I ever knew and had the pleasure of working for. Joe was the most amazing person I ever knew with the amount of knowledge he knew and patience he had to repair anything rather than replace it. I remember one time, Fran could have had a new refrigerator from a lightening power surge, but Joe stepped up to the plate and replaced and repaired it all ...that's just the way he was and what brought him lots of pleasure...the challenge of it. Fran I miss all of you so much. Hope everyone it doing well.

My hugs, thoughts, and prayers to all of you during this extremely difficult time. My heart is aching for you all - I loved getting to know Joe and Fran when I started working at the GHI in 1988. Although he scared me to death, in the years that followed, I learned that he was one of the kindest, gentlest men around. His family and his passions were his life. God has gained another angel, and may you all feel God's love and warmth at this time. Love you all very much!
