Dorcy Porter

Dorcy Porter, 76, of Hartford, died peacefully on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Saint Francis Hospital in the presence of his sons and daughters. He was born in Manchester, Jamaica, and he spent most of his life in Hartford. He was the son of the late Festus N. Porter and Theresa Porter (Larman). Starting at the age of 16, Dorcy dedicated his life to the Lord. He taught and preached the gospel up until the day he died. He immigrated to America on a farm workers contract and eventually moved to Hartford where he met his wife Betsy Ann Porter (Byrd) with whom he enjoyed a marriage of 42 years. He retired from Stanadyne Corporation after 37 years of loyal service. In addition to his parents, Dorcy is predeceased by his wife Betsy, a daughter, Eileen, and a brother, Bishop Alvin Porter. He leaves to mourn three daughters and three sons: Jennifer Porter Gore of Maryland, Phyllis Simpson of Hartford, Douglas Porter and wife Shelly, of Bloomfield, Timothy Porter and wife Tasha, of Manchester, Theresa Lindsay and husband Delroy, of Bloomfield and Stephen Porter and wife Nekeita, of Hartford. He leaves thirteen grandchildren: Tamara, Zaire, Joseph, Jasmine, Mark, Dahlia, Isaiah, Nathan, Betsy, Benjamin, Maya, Phillip and Stephon; two sisters, Eva Barclay and Esme Wood-and a host of family, friends and loved ones. A home going service will be held on Friday, April 18, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Living Word Empowerment Ministries, 510 Wethersfield Ave, Hartford, CT with calling hours from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Mountain View Cemetery in Bloomfield, CT. Flowers should be sent to Henry L. Fuqua Funeral Service, 94 Granby Street, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
