Doreen Riley Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Apr. 18 to Apr. 20, 2009.

RILEY Doreen Isobel Jean (Yeadon) March 7, 1926 - April 10, 2009 With profound sadness we announce Doreen's passing. Born March 7, 1926, in Burnaby, B.C., our Mom passed away April 10, 2009 at home, with family by her side. Doreen lived a full and happy life, the youngest of five, born to Belle and Theo Yeadon, predeceased by all; sister Stella, and brothers Jack, Roy and Dave. Though she would best be remembered as a tomboy, baseball player, hiker, camper, hunter, fisher, boater, painter, writer, golfer and cook, Mom was equally at ease dancing the night away at the Panorama Roof. Mom married our Dad, Chuck Riley in 1947, and together they enjoyed life to the fullest, sharing all activities with family and friends, whether at the family home on Deer Lake, boating on the coast, flying into their beloved log cabin at Euchiniko, the house in Indian Wells, or vacations in the sun. Doreen is survived by the love of her life, husband and soulmate, Chuck, daughter Colleen (Wayne) Orthner, son Mark (Debee) Riley, granddaughter Liana (Jason) Battye, grandsons David (Tanya) Orthner, Dustin (Janine) Riley, and Jeremy (Jessie) Riley. Also missing her are great-grandsons Bryce, Tyson and Matt, with another baby on the way for Jeremy and Jessie. Mom is survived as well by cousin Leen Manning, sister-in-law Nancy Yeadon, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Doreen was always loving and supportive of her family, and generous and true in her friendships, some lasting over 60 years. She was a proud member of Peace Portal Golf Club, and was Ladies Club Champion and Seniors Champion many times over, a passionate player, and keen competitor, known affectionately as RILEY! Many thanks to all the ladies at the club for their friendships and support over the years. We also wish to thank Dr. Grace Park and her wonderful team, and the compassionate in-home palliative care from Nurse Next Door. A special thank you to Suzanne King, Mom's friend of six decades, who travelled from Vernon to say a final adieu, and to dear friend of 66 years, Ann Jefferys, thanks so much for coming to stay these two weeks. Your help and support will always be appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held May 2nd, 2:00 - 5:00pm at 16655 - 18th Avenue in Surrey. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the B.C. Cancer Society in Doreen's name would be greatly appreciated.

To Chuck, Coll and Mark, who have always been more than a family to me. The death of both my dad and now Auntie Dore, in just two weeks, has been more than devastating to the whole family. Auntie Dore has always been a “second mom” to me, and I’m left with wonderful memories of her, but with much sadness, as well. Mom is in disbelief, as I know you are too, Chuck. You have both not only lost your best friends, but your loving partners as well, and in such a short time. The loss of someone so close is difficult to bear, and we share the depths of your grief. I am proud to say, that I have Auntie Dore’s old 16 gauge shotgun, hanging in our log house, and it brings back lots of good ole memories of the Euchiniko days. I’m glad I had the opportunity to see Auntie Dore again, and kiss her goodbye, one last time. I know your hearts are filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together, as our hearts are as well. And, I know Auntie Dore had more than a wonderful life, with many life-long friends. May these wonderful memories, always bring you comfort.

Uncle Chuck, Col, Mark and families.

If tears could build a stairway, and memories were a lane. We would walk all the way to heaven, to bring you home again. Aunty Dore, you were gone before we knew it, and only God knows the reason why. He saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you and whispered, come to me. With tearful eyes we watched you, as we saw you pass away. Although we loved you deeply, we could not make you stay. Our hearts ache in sadness, and secret tears will flow. What it's meant to me to lose you, no one will ever know.

I will always miss you Aunty Dore,
Lynda--or as you always
called me, Lyn.

Mark, our condolences to you, your dad and your family. Your mom was always so gracious and generous with all of us. Even when it seemed like we were invading her home, year after year. During some difficult times, I always appreciated the hospitality of your family. What a wonderful story of her life. Take care.
