Doris BUTLER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 2 to Nov. 3, 2014.
BUTLER, Doris Schubbert

Doris Schubbert Butler passed from this life on October 28, 2014, at the age of 88. She was born on September 19, 1926 and lived in Austin her entire life. She was a lifelong member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church where she served as Treasurer of the Lutheran Women's organization and was a member of the Alter Guild. Doris was a caring and compassionate person with a gentle spirit, loving personality, and a strong commitment to her faith, her loved ones, and her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charley and Bertha (Schoenfeld) Schubbert, and her step-mother, Elsie Schubbert. On November 14, 1948 she married Joe Butler at St. Martin's Lutheran Church. Joe passed away in July of 1960.

Doris worked diligently to care for and nurture their two young children. She worked for National Life Insurance, retiring after 30 years of service. Subsequently, she worked for Cook-Walden Funeral Home, Texas Rehabilitation Commission, and German-Texas Heritage Society.

She was a member of a ladies' tap-dancing group, Judy Lee's Dancing Dames, which performed at events in and around Austin and competed in Las Vegas. Doris tap-danced in this troupe well into her 70s.

Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Jean Butler Johnson (and husband, Rev. Kurt Johnson, Sr.) of Austin, her son, Larry Joe Butler of Austin, her grandchildren by marriage, Derek Johnson (wife, Gretchen, and their children) of Georgetown, Jessica Johnson Maier (husband, Joe) of Round Rock, and Kurt Johnson II of Austin. Also surviving are her sister, Rose Marie Schubbert Lock of Houston, her nieces, Sandra Lock Foster (husband, Sam, and step-son, Josh) of Sugar Land and Leigh Ann Lock Doughty (husband, Doug, and son, Eric) of Missouri City. Other survivors include her extended family, her many friends, and her loyal American Eskimo dog, Kassie.

Special and heartfelt thanks are extended to North Austin Medical Center and especially Doris' nurses, for their compassionate care, and to the Bereavement Committee of St. Martin's Lutheran Church.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel at St. Martin's Lutheran Church, 606 W. 15th Street in Austin, on Saturday, November 8 at 1 p.m. The private committal service will be held at Austin Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials should be directed to St. Martin's Lutheran Church and the Austin Humane Society.
