Doris Maher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 18, 2023.
Doris A. (Atkinson) Maher, 92, of Newington, a loving Mom, Mimi, Grammie and friend, passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2023. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert B. Maher. Born and raised in Providence, RI, daughter of the late Frederick and Melba (Short) Atkinson, she was a Newington resident for 65 years. Doris graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1952 and was a lifelong member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority. She worked at the Hartford Board of Education office of early childhood education for many years before her retirement. With her chef husband Bob, she loved to organize dinner parties and holidays with family. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and knitting and had a special eye for decorating. She loved skiing and tennis with family and friends. She was a conversationalist, able to talk to anyone, drawing them in with her warmth. She always had a good story to tell. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her adored grandchildren. She leaves her three children, Douglas Maher of NH, Susan Botticello of Rocky Hill, and William Maher and his wife Tonimarie of MA, and nine grandchildren, Jeffrey Botticello, Peter Botticello and his fiancée Nuria Romero-Navarette, Connor, Andrew, Robert, Rena, Emma, Jaxsin and Olivander Maher. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Nancy Atkinson and Phyllis Maher, numerous nieces and nephews and many lifelong friends and adjunct family. She was predeceased by her brother Alan Atkinson and her son-in-law, Stephen Botticello. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, April 20th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington. Her funeral service will be held on Friday, April 21st at 10:00 a.m. at Newington Memorial. Following the service, Doris will be laid to rest in West Meadow Cemetery. I have many wonderful memories of Aunt Doris. First of course were the great family reunions they hosted for so many years. She always treated each and every one of us cousins as special. Doris was always the Cool Aunt.... She did crafts with us and shared her time with us. I have always loved her country decorating... so much to see at her home. She will be sadly missed. Condolences to you all.
