Doris SPOONER Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post from Feb. 19 to Feb. 21, 2015.
SPOONER, Doris Amelia Emma
(nee Thomson)
1920 - 2015
Better known as Mum, Grandmother, Sister, Auntie Doris, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Doris was predeceased by her parents, David and Emma (Braun) Thomson, husband Henry, brothers Patrick, Reginald and Romeo (Agnes), and sister Beatrice (William). She is survived by her four children Dave (Deb), Betty Ann (Lutz Heim), Joy (James Brickell) and Richard (Maggi); grandchildren Gineen (Darrin), Jason, Michael (Janine), Nicholas, Alexis, Emma, Thomas, David, Patric, Jessalyn and Jacob; great-grandchildren Cole (Crystal), Christopher and Alexandra; great- great-grandchild Taylor; nieces and nephews Ken (Paula), Lynda, Susan (Frank), and Shirley (Rod), as well as many, many close friends. Doris was born September 14, 1920 on the farm near Aylesbury, Saskatchewan. Her childhood was filled with adventures from riding the horse to school, to helping on the farm. She loved playing ball; in 1946-47 she played first base on the champion Ladies Fastball team, the Aylesbury Rockettes. She and Beatrice ran the café in Aylesbury before they moved to Moose Jaw, and ultimately Regina (with Ken in tow) to work. They spent many summers managing the cook car for Barber Construction. Doris and Henry married in 1951; together they had four children. Doris dedicated her life to raising the children and sharing in their adventures. At the age of 54 Doris embarked on her first flight travelling to UK with Beatrice and William. Over the next 40 years, Doris travelled extensively, to visit family and friends in Canada, Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, the USA and Ecuador. In 2014, at the age of 93, she took her final trips to visit her daughters and their families in Ottawa and Adelaide. She always made time for her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was never too busy to attend a sporting event, stage production, recital practice, play cards or dominoes. Any project Doris took on she mastered; she was a baker, a canner, a knitter, a quilter, and a sewer. In 1999 Doris moved to the Cornwall Village Co- operative to be closer to Beatrice. In 2010 Doris started attending the day program at William Booth. In 2014 Doris moved to Bethel Manor. We thank all who ensured Doris enjoyed each day of her life; right to the end. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 24, 2015, Victoria Avenue Funeral Home, 2080 East Victoria Avenue, Regina, SK. Interment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests your consideration of a donation to Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre St. Regina, SK or the Salvation Army William Booth Special Care Home, 50 Angus Road, Regina, SK.

Thank you Doris for being that special person in my life; you taught me to read and that made all the difference. I know you lived a full and vital life and I shall always remember you for your personal wisdom and sense of personal adventure.

Dear Betty-ann, Joy, Rick and David
We are so sad to hear that Doris has left us.
Doris has a very special place in the hearts of the 'Fishburn' household in Adelaide, Australia.
We simply loved her and while we never saw her as much as we would have liked we will always miss her gentle manner and mischievous sense of humour.
Ann-Marie and I remember being in Calgary during a visit to Canada in 1984 and Doris and Rick driving from Regina to spend a day with us. That was typical of Doris, she always made the effort to keep in touch. Doris made us feel special and she was special.
You have lost a wonderful mother, we have lost a dear friend and Kay (Catherine) has lost her beloved card playing partner from Doris's frequent visits to Adelaide.
Our thoughts and love are with you, Kay, Ann-Marie and Barry

Dear Rick and families: I fondly remember your mother and what a bright ray of sunshine she was. I only knew her through Rick, and as a supportive neighbour to Holy Rosary School and Cathedral. But, what wonderful support. She is one who made the world a much much better place because she was here. She lives on in all her family, and all others she inspired.

I am sorry I will not be able to attend the funeral but I just wanted to extend to the family how proud she was of all of you and had you all on a pedestal I only met Doris approximately 6 months ago and she had the most amazing positive attitude that I have ever seen in which we can all learn from. This attitude shone through her children, grandchildren etc. My thoughts and prayers are with the Spooner family at this time. There was an angle among us and now she has been called home.

Doris has been my mother in law for over thirty years. And in all that time, I never quite understood what mother in law' jokes were about. My mother in law was great. Doris was always positive and friendly and eager to know what I was up to. Whether she was asking about my professional life, inquiring about cottage repairs, or discussing the news of the day, Doris took a genuine interest. I'm happy we were able to spend time with Doris in Regina this past New Year's. I will miss her.

The positive impact that Doris had on my life can't be summed up in a few words. She was a subtle force and a warm light. She was funny and sharp and generous. The welcoming aroma of fresh-baked bread will always remind me of her. My heart is bigger and kinder because she is in it.

February 21, 2015

Doris was such a special lady. When I was the district nurse she was always right there to lend a hand to help her community in whatever way possible. Who can ever forget her lovely bread made in coffee cans. Her lovely smile and easy upbeat attitude to life will always be a treasure to remember. My sincere sympathy to you. Hers was a life well lived. Marion Bjerke

To the family -

In the days and weeks that follow,
Perhaps you'll often find
That even long-lost memories
Will slip into your mind,
And suddenly your loved one
Won't seem so far from you
You'll think of touching stories,
The things you used to do,
And favorite family moments
In which you both took part
These souvenirs of happy times
Will keep you close in heart.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss.
