My new biggest regret is not keeping in touch with my friend these past few years. I spent countless days with Grant throughout high school and I will always remember him as the intelligent person he was. I will never think of Grant without a feeling of happiness. Please accept my condolences, we have lost someone special.

I babysat Grant when he was very young. He was one of the best kids to babysit, except when there was a problem with Downy, his little piglet stuffed animal. About 8 months ago I found him on Facebook as I was trying to catch up with his mom. It was great to talk to him. I only wish it could have been in person. He grew up to be an incredible young man. I pray Treven follows in his daddy's footsteps with his compassion and drive. We need a lot more people like that in this world.

Dear Treven,
I know you and your dad only through the numerous amount of pictures I would get of both of you and by the conversations I would have with your grandmom. I hope someday to meet you because you are a special little boy.

Dear Joan,
In the 20+ years I have known you I have never seen you so happy! To give up everything you have to move to NH to take care of Grant and Treven goes to show what a warm and loving person you are. You have an overwhelming amount of love in your heart that I knew would blanket Grant and Treven forever. Treven is truly blessed to have an amazing grandmom. I love you. Mark

Grant was more than a friend, he was a member of our family. He helped us when we thought all hope was gone. He was our angel from heaven and our hero. It breaks my heart everyday to know he's gone, but ironically, he has been watching over us and still continues to bless us to this day. We're always going to be in touch with Treven so we can tell him stories about you. Trust me, stories we do have!
We love you, Grant. We can never thank you enough.
Your family in El Paso, Tx.

There are many things that happen in life that I don't understand, especially the fact that you're gone so soon. You have certainly left your mark and your legacy will without a doubt live on...you are loved beyond measure. El Monster is going to grow into a great man; it's in his genes. Treven, your daddy loved you more than anything, he was so proud that you were his son. To Grants family, I feel deeply for you. I hope that you heal gently and find solace in knowing that he made a huge/enduring impact in the hearts and lives of many.

Mr. Grant and Mrs. Hayfield:
Yesterday I learned of the unfortunate and untimely death of your son and fellow soldier Grant. There are no words to describe the loss that I am feeling right now and I cannot imagine the sorrow that has been thrust on your family.
I will always remember Grant as the soldier who always kept our spirits up and the consumate professional he was when his advice was needed the most. Grant was a great credit to his family and friends as he lived the values of Duty, Honor, Country in everything he did.
The world looses a great man, a great soldier, but gains a guardian angel. May the prayers of those us who knew him and those of my family and I help you find the much needed comfort in this time of grief.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Grant G. Mullen our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Grant. And to Grant it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during Operation Iraqi Freedom while serving in the U.S. Army. Grant, you served with honor and distinction; we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,211 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Grant's family and loved ones.
