DOROTHY "DOT" led a life well lived. She died June 14, 2014, at the age of 97, in her home in Washington State of age-related causes. Dorothy was born and raised in Philadelphia, the eldest of six children. She graduated from Simon Gratz High School in 1935, and in 1940, Dorothy married Irving Cohen. They moved to Cherry Hill in 1953 to raise their two children. They enjoyed 52 ½ years of marriage before Dot was widowed, and Irv remained the love of her life for the rest of her life. Dorothy lived in the same house in Cherry Hill until age 85, at which time she moved to Port Angeles, WA to live closer to her daughter. She remained active in that community well into her 90's.
A talented painter and sewer, Dorothy was also a lifelong swimmer and an avid reader. Her creative streak came out in everything she touched. Dot loved life, and she loved her life. She is best remembered by her red hair and outgoing manner, her passion for swimming and her painting.
Dot is survived by her son Richard (Susan) Cahaan, daughter, Eileen (John) Herrling; 3 grandchildren, Dirk, Danielle and Lianne; 7 great grandchildren; brother, Harry Kartoz; sister-in-law, Judith Kartoz and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother, Goldie Silvers Kartoz; father, Louis Kartoz; sisters, Diana, Lillian and Frances; brother, Bernie; and her husband, Irving.
Dot had the spirit of an eagle that soared. Donations may be made to the William Shore Memorial Pool, care of the Dorothy Cohen Fund, 225 East Fifth St. Port Angeles WA 98362.
