Dorothy Dupuis Obituary

Published by Comox Valley Echo from Jun. 20 to Jun. 22, 2014.
DUPUIS, Dorothy March 11, 1921 - March 20, 2014 . Dorothy Reta Dupuis was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia and made the world a better place for the 93 years she was here. She was the 5th child in a family of 9 children. With an amazing memory, bright mind, curiosity for people, places and events, she was a natural to become the family go-to historian. Her quick wit, writing skills and storytelling were enjoyed by many. As a true Maritimer generosity was always in Dorothy's blood. She would give the shirt off her back if someone was in need. Being a fabulous cook she enjoyed nothing more than setting another place at the table to make a guest feel at home. In the 1930's Dorothy's Aunt Minnie had a boarding house for miners in Springhill, NS and she spent many a happy time there visiting and working alongside her cousins. Dorothy married the love of her life, Henry (Betts) Dupuis, and their three children (Douglas, Linda and Gail) were born in Kentville, NS. Family was everything to her and Henry's military career provided the opportunity for them to travel and live throughout Canada in London, Ontario; Dawson Creek, BC; and Chilliwack, BC. After bravely dealing with a greater number of health concerns than anyone should have to bear, Dorothy passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox, BC. "Going Home" before her in 1990 was her husband Henry, and ever so sadly her son Douglas in 2008. She is survived by her one remaining and very close younger brother Robert Coates, Halifax, NS; her two loving daughters that miss her dearly...Linda (married to Michael De Belser) Courtenay, BC and Gail (married to Ken Maggs) New Westminster, BC. Also surviving Dorothy are nieces, a nephew, grandchildren, and adorable great grandchildren. Linda and Gail would like to thank: Dr. Theresa Wilson for the attention, personal care and loving support she provided to their Mom, to the VIHA Home Support team for their tender loving care and patience which gave their mother the gift of choice to remain living somewhat independently in her own home, to the gals at Glacier View Lodge where she went on Thursdays for a 'spa' day when she felt well enough, and to the compassionate and helpful staff on the 2nd floor in the Transitional Care Unit at St. Joe's Hospital who enabled her to live her last days with ease and grace. In keeping with Dorothy's passion for life, for attending music concerts, dancing, and listening to the blues, a joy-filled Celebration Of her Life will be held in the future in Chilliwack, BC with family and friends. Although I understand some may be saddened when I leave, One day, we will all meet again that's what I believe... May my girls Linda and Gail especially find peace in the thought that my heart is free from care and that I am happy! ~ Dorothy ~ Mom ~

Hi Mom...it hurts my heart all over again to see your picture in the paper today. My friend Christine literally chased after me this morning to give me a hug and to say that she read about you in the paper and that you sounded like a wonderful and amazing person. I wish you and I could share more stories over a cup of tea today. I love you and miss you so. xoxox
