Dorothy Flay Obituary

Published by Asbury Park Press from Apr. 25 to Apr. 27, 2018.
Dorothy B. Flay

Wall Township - Dorothy B. Flay lived every day with a zest for life and a never-ending desire to make everyday fun.

Born in 1931 to John and Pauline McGuirk in Brooklyn, New York, Dorothy spent most of her professional career working in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries as a trademarks specialist in New York City.

As a single mother in her 30's and 40's, she yearned for her weekends at the New Jersey shore in Sea Girt and Spring Lake, eventually moving there to the home she lived in permanently until her death on Monday, April 23rd of this year.

Anyone who knew Dorothy in her later years was quite aware of the things she loved and the people she adored.

Dorothy always had cats in her life. They played an important role in her happiness as well as the happiness of her family. As a young girl growing up in Ridgewood, Queens in New York her first cat was named Squeaky and then had many others through her years namely Marshmallow, Pumpkin, Smokey, Cocoa and Mini. She would be thrilled that her feline family members were mentioned in her notice.

Her favorite entertainment was taking weekly trips to the Borgata Hotel and Casino where she was well known as an avid slot player and a fan of a chocolate martini or two.

Dorothy Barbara Flay is survived by her former husband Bill, her son, Bobby and her loving granddaughter, Sophie. Her energy and spirit will be missed by all that knew her. She would have been 87 on May 20.

All services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Alley Cat Allies (https://www.alleycat.org/, P.O. Box 98179, Washington, D.C. 20077, 866-309-6207) or North Shore Animal League (https://www.animalleague.org/, 25 Davis Ave, Port Washington, NY 11050, (516) 883-7575) if desired. Dorothy was so funny and personable, and popular amongst the Weybridge crew! She was especially proud of her son. I fondly remember Dorothy and friends hanging together outside at our complex. I was running out to grab a quick (fast food?) dinner and she said what the hell are you eating that crap for?I quickly replied no one's a gourmet chef in my house Lol. She always made us laugh. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing.

So sorry to learn today of the loss of a wonderful person that I met 4 years ago under the most unusual circumstances. I am a contractor that was called to Dorothy's home to make repairs on a window that was broken by an HVAC company. I enjoyed our conversations over coffee, especially the ones involving her cats. I was working in her complex today and decided to stop by to say hello, only to learn of her fate. Rest in Peace to a very sweet and kind lady! ❤

Just watched an episode of Bobby's cooking show from 1997 and saw his beautiful Mom and the love and warmth between mother and son was palpable. Never met but want to extend my condolences because I understand the pain and horrific loss of losing a mom.

Dorothy so sorry that our special time we spent together was so short. I will always remember our time in Juno Beach and our love for our kitties. Two beautiful woman that totally became friends.
Then when you and the gang visited me in Penny Royal, Brunswick, NY. My little gentlemans farm from my little chickens, cats, dogs, deer, porcupines, etc etc.
Only wish I had spent more time developing a loving friendship with such a wonderful person. Will cherish your kitty music box that I look at everyday.
Rest In Peace my friend.
PS Bobby if you send me an address I will send you a small gift that I have had and never sent to your mom.
Love prayers hugs, Chiara

Having Dorothy as a hairdressing client for many years allowed me the joy of knowing her and indulging in spirited conversation every time we saw each other. She adored her family and loved the Jersey Shore and I will miss her regularly. Blessings to her family members.

I remember meeting Dorothy, years ago. One spunky lady!

I have a picture from 1946 with her as the maid of honour for Margie and 'Tippy' Thibado's wedding, and my dad (Tip's brother) was the best man.

So very sorry for her family's loss; Aunt Marge passed just a few months ago and now Dorothy is gone as well. Two wonderful ladies and many great memories.
