Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 5 to Mar. 6, 2011.
Dorothy Hennig Dorothy Alvina Hennig, late of Regina, passed away on February 28, 2011, at the age of 70 years. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents Frederick and Florence Hennig and her sister Irene Hennig. Dorothy is survived by her sister Donna (Jerome) Ratch, Regina, SK, one niece Rachel Ratch (Paul Flaman), Vibank, SK, and their children Jamie and Jasmin, and one nephew Mathew (Lorena) Ratch, Regina, SK, and their children Heidi and Stephanie. Dorothy was born in 1940 and raised on the family farm near Francis. She took an interest in music at an early age and loved the piano and singing. She graduated as valedictorian from high school in 1958 and then pursued her love of music, studying at the Royal Conservatory of Music at the University of Toronto and attending the Walter Thornton Modelling School. She then went on to work as an opera performer and musician, first in London, England and later Paris, France. An illness ended her career and brought her home to Canada in 1967. Dorothy spent many of her years attending church services and events around Regina and loved both walking and shopping around the city. Service details will be announced at a later date.

I always took notice of Dorothy when I saw her, not because of her striking appearance but more for the presence she had. I would have loved to have seen her perform as she had a way of impacting people and leaving a lasting impression just by being herself.

Rest In Peace Dorothy, we will miss you.

I was 11 when I met Dorothy's parents and sisters in 1948 on their farm in Francis, just a few months upon immigrating from Germany. We lived in Yellow Grass for 5 years, then in Regina.

If you met her...you would never forget her. She always had an air of grace about her. A little treasure of the community will be sadly missed.

One day, about 25 years ago, I saw Dorothy ordering from a grocery store deli and I, at the tender age of 8 or 9, marvelled at her polite spirit and kindness. I have seen her here and there over the years, and each time I have been brought back to that grocery store memory. I too, would love to know this womans life story.

I will greatly miss Dorothy's presence in Regina. She was my downstairs neighbour on Smith Street for years, and always had a kind smile to share. While many of us did not know her, she was an icon in this city. Tiene una buena vieje, Dorothy.

Thank you for the lovely memories, and impressive insight to a woman who was 'known' by so many. It is wonderful that, in passing, Dorothy has risen up like a beautiful phoenix from the ashes. She was 'known' by so many, and it's wonderful that, with this obituary, she will be remembered by an entire city, for the beautiful and accomplished woman that she was.

Why does it take a time of loss to know what shall be missed. I saw Dorothy on Hamilton Street often, including just last week at noon. I often wondered about her personal situation, and of course now regret not speaking with her. I am saddened of our loss.

My thoughts go out to all her family. She was such a familiar face in Regina walking the downtown sector. She will be missed as much as a landmark.

I am very sad for your loss. I have not had the pleasure of meeting her personally or even knowing her first name. I saw Dorthy so often downtown and always wondered about her. Regina has lost one of it's most memorable icons.

It is only now that my sister and I made the association. Dorothy was indeed known to all, and we only realized now that we grew up neighbours with her sister Donna and husband Jerry, Rachel and Mathew, their children. I had no idea this woman had such an accomplished past. I am amazed. My condolences to Jerry, Donna, Rachel and Mathew, and all of Dorothy's family and friends alike. Downtown Regina will definitely feel a little more empty without her physical presence.

“There are many rooms in my Father's house. I would not tell you this if it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you. After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back. Then I will take you with me, so that you can be where I am.”

Dorothy was a fixture downtown ever since I moved to Regina 30 years ago. I often saw her at mass at Holy Rosary Cathedral. I will miss her.

I think most people who worked downtown are familiar with Dorothy and will miss seeing her everywhere. A real gentle soul and, as you can see from her picture, a beautiful person inside and out.

Dorothy was part of my memories of growing up in the Cathedral area and as part of Holy Rosary parish where she would often attend. She also attended many musical events I and my family were part of, never knowing that she had such a bright and talented past. I will pray for her repose and for her family.

Dorothy sat one pew behind me at First Presbyterian Church. A few months ago, I said to her how I thought she had such a wonderful voice... little did I know of her musical background. As Brad our minister commented, we could always count on seeing Dorothy early for church every Sunday. I'm going to miss her special way of saying "Amen" at the end of the Lord's Prayer... that always brought a smile to my face. God bless you Dorothy.

My name Terry I work at the cooper Kettle restaurant, Dorothy was a long term customer for many years. Every morning she would ask how I was doing. She will be greatly missed by all the staff.

I am the Rev. Brad Childs from First Presbyterian Church. Dorothy has been a member of our church for about two years now. She was almost always the second person in the building and the first in the pews. She would say "good morning Reverend" first thing and then read through the whole bulletin before most people even got to the church. I was very saddened to hear of Dorothy's passing. If I or the church can be of any help please let me know. -Brad
