Dorothy Hodgson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 17 to Jan. 18, 2009.
HODGSON _ (nee Folk) Dorothy 1925 - 2009 Dorothy Margaret Folk was born in Innisfail to Dee and Beryl Folk in 1925. With her parents or husband she lived numerous places in Alberta - Markerville, Red Deer, Westlock, Manyberries, Etzicom, Bow Island, Drumheller and Vermilion. Lastly, she lived in Edmonton. While living in Vermilion Dorothy met Ernest Hodgson and they were married in 1951. Dorothy was passionate about life. She was courageous, generous, fun, adventurous, welcoming and interesting. Dorothy preferred to play piano or read to her grandchildren to doing housework. She loved to travel and had many trips with family and on her own. She made a home where friends and relatives were always welcome, providing good food, flowers and an attractive table. She had a passion for music. After obtaining two music degrees she taught piano for over forty years. She played the organ, sang in church choir and loved to go to concerts with family or friends. She particularly liked classical but was always ready to listen to other types of music. Dorothy liked to go and support people she knew who were performing, particularly her grandchildren. Dorothy was an active volunteer. She worked with United Church Archives and Edmonton Presbytery, the IODE, Allen Gray Auxiliary board and committees at Lifestyle Options. This is in addition to various ways she helped in whichever church she and Ernie were attending. Dorothy was also tough minded and had spunk. She was a good role model for her daughters and was proud they had turned out to be strong and independent. She was a good companion to Ernest and loved God her entire life. She will be sorely missed. Dorothy is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, Ernest Hodgson and her daughters, Mary Beryl Long, Frances Hodgson, Audrey Hodgson-Ward (George Ward) and Ellen Hodgson. She is also survived by grandchildren, James Keltie (Rhonda Wilson), Katherine Belanger, Simon Belanger and two great-grandchildren, Christopher Buyer and Kamryn Keltie. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, at Knox Metropolitan United Church, Edmonton. Dorothy did not want a lot of flowers at her funeral. Instead, please support good music and make a donation to Alberta Baroque Ensemble, or help others by making a donation to Bissell Centre or Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre. CONNELLY-McKINLEY FUNERAL HOME, 10011 - 114 Street, Edmonton, Alberta. Telephone: 1-780-422-2222.

For all the Hodgson family especially my dear friend Fran. I have so many lovely memories of your mom from when we met over 38 years ago through our association with Job's Daughters. I wish that I could have been there at her service. She was my Mom when I was in Edmonton, took care of all of us adopted family members like her own and I loved all of the time I spent with your family. She welcomed me the first time we met as if she had known me forever and always made me feel at home. What a grand lady!!! The music in heaven has just become more beautiful because she is there helping to make the joyous sounds.

Ellen, I am very sorry for the loss of your Mother. Please accept my deepest condolences. I know your faith will help to sustain you through this difficult time.

A Native American Prayer:

I give you this one thought to keep -
I am with you still - I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone -
I am with you still - in each new dawn.
