Dorothy Strain Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2025.
Dorothy (Rushing) Strain, (nee Rimarchick), 95, passed away, February 23, 2025. Dorothy was born in Granite City, IL on October 30, 1929. She died peacefully in her sleep under hospice care in Bennington, VT.

Dorothy, a 1947 graduate of Granite City High School, married Raymond Rushing on May 27, 1950. They had 5 sons; Thomas (Sandra,) Gary (Colleen,) David (Mary Jane,) Daniel, and John (Ellen.) Dorothy also had 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. After Dorothy was widowed in 1977, she married Ralph Strain, also of Granite City.

After Dorothy retired from National Steel, she and Ralph moved to Lake of the Ozarks, where they loved to be either in their pontoon boat on the lake, golfing with friends or entertaining family. They later moved to Phoenix, AZ, where Dorothy's sisters lived. There, Dorothy developed a passion for golf, participating in senior leagues and on multiple occasions winning the "Ace of the Month" award. Later, Dorothy returned to the Granite City area residing in Glen Carbon, IL and then spent the last 4 years of her life in Vermont, near her son John and his family.

Dorothy loved being active and spending time with her family. We loved her, we miss her and we will never forget her smile and her great sense of humor. Dorothy also loved to bake, as we will always remember her famous chocolate chip cookies, Christmas cookies and homemade pizza.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her father and mother, Karl and Margaret Rimarchick, her husbands, Raymond Rushing and Ralph Strain, her son Daniel and her sisters Anne, Veronica and Margaret.

Dorothy has chosen to be cremated, and come back home, to be buried in the spring of 2025 at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL. A small memorial service will be scheduled at that time.

Bobbie , from Palm Springs, Ca is visiting me in Seattle, Wa talking about the good old days in Granite City and we thought of all the fun times we had with our aunt Dorothy. We looked for her information online to call her and sadly discovered that she had passed. We remember her laughter, her hugs, her stories of the twins when they were babies. The 80th birthday she planned for Grandma Rimarchik. How great for all her family that she lived such a long life. And we feel very lucky to have had her in our lives for the years we lived close by. Sending hugs to all of you. Your favorite cousins,Bobbie and Barb
