Dorothy Wilkinson Obituary

Dorothy Sylvia Wilkinson
1926 ~ 2016

Dorothy Wilkinson passed away unexpectedly with her family by her side on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at the age of 90 years. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Ross and Gerda Hesby; mother and father-in-law, Victor and Ruth Wilkinson; brother, Earl Hesby and brothers-in-law, Murray "Bus" Wilkinson, John "Jack" Bray and Roy Maki. Dorothy was born on the farm at Innes, Saskatchewan on April 24, 1926 to Norwegian immigrants, Ross and Gerda Hesby. She was the second of three children. She received her early education at Dunreath Elementary School and graduated from Griffin High School. Dorothy went on to acquire her teaching certificate and from 1947 to 1949 she taught at several schools in the Weyburn school unit. After her short teaching career Dorothy left Canada with her mother to visit Norway. Her visit became a nine month stay, in which time Dorothy learned and lived her Nordic culture. Her Norwegian heritage remained a very important part of her life. Upon her return to Canada, Dorothy worked at the Weyburn Post Office where she remained until her marriage to Don on June 20, 1951. Don and Dorothy then moved to Goodwater, Saskatchewan where they began their 32 year career with PFRA. Here they raised their three children, Doug, Barb and Warren. In July of 2009, Don and Dorothy moved to Weyburn to start a well-deserved retirement. Dorothy was an avid gardener, curler and was a long time member of the United Church Women's group and the Hospital Auxiliary. Dorothy had a very determined and positive approach to life and that spirit remained with her to the end. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 65 years, Donald Wilkinson of Weyburn, SK; son, Doug Wilkinson of Arrowwood, AB; daughter, Barb Blackmer (Rich Wilde) of Regina, SK; son, Warren Wilkinson (Faye Hanson) of Fillmore, SK; grandchildren, Darla (Kurtis) McFazden, Danielle Wilkinson, Kenna Wilkinson, Darby and Tara Wilkinson, Aaron Blackmer (Gina), Sharla Torkelson, Nick (Nikki) Rebrinsky and Liz (Aaron) Bohnert; 6 great grandchildren, sister, Anna Maki; sisters-in-law, Audrey Hesby, Audrey Wilkinson and Elaine Bray as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, Saskatchewan with Reverend M. Barnabas officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Pallbearers were Ed Roncin, Brian Winter, Marshall Holliday, Bill Holliday, Rod Stafford and Verne Cooke. Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to a charity of the donor's choice.

So saddened to hear of Dorothy's passing, growing up in Goodwater she was always such a wonderful lady. I saw her not that long ago in Weyburn with Don and she had to come for a visit with my kids and I. She will be missed by many.
