URBANA – Dorris A. Barbee, 69, of Urbana went on to glory at 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2009, followed by a homegoing service at 11 at The Church of the Living God, 1109 N. Fourth St., Champaign. Bishop Lloyd E. Gwin will officiate. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign. Hambrick & Son Funeral Home, 1203 N. Market St., Champaign, is in charge of arrangements.
Dorris Albert Barbee was born on Jan. 30, 1940, in Nashville, Tenn., the son of Dorris and Worolene C. (Wells) Barbee. He married Johynnie Mae Woodruff on June 26, 1960, in Nashville, Tennessee and this union was blessed with five children. His wife, Johynnie Mae, preceded him in death on March 15, 1991. He married Margie Bean on July 26, 2003, in Champaign. She survives.
As a third-generation plasterer, Mr. Barbee moved to Champaign in 1957 to work with his father. His excellent work earned him the reputation of being a highly respected plasterer throughout central Illinois.
Mr. Barbee was an active member and deacon at The Church of the Living God in Champaign. He enjoyed studying the Bible with his men's group, skating, bowling and being surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends.
Mr. Barbee is survived by his sons, Darryl Barbee and wife Quiana of Decatur, Derrick Barbee of Champaign; two daughters, Angela Barbee-Evans and husband Charles of Champaign and Pamela Barbee of Middletown, Conn.; two brothers, Wilbur Barbee and wife Viola (Sally) of Inglewood, Calif., and Howard Barbee and wife Linda of Nashville, Tenn.; three sisters, Hattie Barbee Reese of Nashville, Tenn., Constance Barbee Hebb and husband William of Nashville, Tenn., and Loretta Denise Barbee Abernathy and husband Myron of Virginia; and three stepdaughters, Tina Bean Stevenson and husband Adlwin of Indianapolis, Cindy Bean Stewart of Champaign and Mildred Bean of Champaign; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Barbee was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Carolyn Celestine Barbee-Bobo; a brother, John Barbee; and a sister, Dorothy Barbee Owens.
