EUREKA - Doug Magnuson, 63, of Eureka passed away and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
Doug was born to Jack and Betty Magnuson on Sept. 8, 1952. He was a graduate of Washington High School and Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He married his wife, Sue, on June 5, 1982, and they enjoyed 33 years of marriage together.
Doug is survived by his wife, Sue; his four daughters, Dorothy Magnuson, Meredith (Peter) Petrany, Marjorie (Zachary) Carter and Laura Magnuson; his mother, Betty Magnuson; four siblings, John (Grace) Magnuson, Anita (Majed) Banjak, Marca (Ted) Lott and Paul Magnuson; three grandchildren, Eli, Colby and Avery; extended family; and friends.
His father preceded him in death.
Doug worked at Kimpling's Ace Hardware in Washington and made many meaningful connections there over the years.
Doug loved his family and sacrificed his time and energy for them. He labored every year building a backyard ice rink for his girls to enjoy, shared his love of gardening, spent many hours cheering on his daughters at sporting events and treated early risers to breakfast out with him. Most of all, Doug's family and friends remember him for how special he made people feel.
During Doug's courageous battle with cancer, his favorite phrases were "Praise the Lord!" and "Praise God!" His primary goal in life was to point others to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
The family would like to thank the staff at OSF Hospital and the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home for the exceptional care he received, and friends, family and their church family at Bethany Baptist Church for their love and support.
Services will be held today, Oct. 16, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Community on Dutch Lane in Washington. Pastor Ritch Boerckel will officiate. Visitation was be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington, and will be one hour prior to services at the church today.

Dear Sue and family,
Donna and I want to offer our condolences to you and your family is the loss of Doug. I remember him well - especially on a canoe trip in Wisconsin with some High School boys. He came along as a counselor/ bouncer. He wore this black coat all week and he was pretty big. One of the boys was outside the camp at twilight when he came upon Doug standing near some garbage cans. He said, Hi to Doug, and when Doug turned around, the kid got the scare of his life. It was a big black bear standing there that he thought was Doug and he came running into the camp fear etched on his face, yelling "Bear" I thought it was Doug" but Doug was sitting in camp with the rest of us with his coat on!
I remember his sincere faith which I can tell only grew through the years. May God give you all you need to get through this trial until we join him in the presence of Jesus.

I have so many great memories of Doug from our high school days together at Washington High School. He had the most amazing sense of humor and was one of the smartest students in our class. Even though I had not kept in close contact with him for many years, I still think of him as one of my closest and dearest friends. The last time I saw him was several years ago at the Dairy Queen in Washington, just about this time of year, at a high school reunion weekend at WACOHI. Several of our old classmates were there, including Steve Towry, Donna Kern and Christine Haggerty. We had a great time, laughing and reminiscing. He always treated me with kindness and respect and, for that, I will always remember him. Best to you, dear friend..

We only met Doug once but we seem to know him well through the updates of his sweet and humble wife Sue & others. His positive and dedicated service to his Lord was continuous during his courageous battle with that horrible disease.
To Sue and family, our deepest sympathy for your loss of a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. We hold you up in prayer.

Doug was a kind neighbor and man. When my boys were young children and were in cub scouts or had to sell for different fundraising events through their school Doug always supported and encouraged them in their fundraising efforts. They were a bit shy when they first started out and knocked on his door but he always greeted them with his warm, caring smile and told them to please stop by here first when you have any fundraiser. This was extremely helpful to us since we have no other relatives in Illinois and had to do the neighborly door to door walk sales method.
Each year in winter we knew when we heard the sound of building and hammering we would looked out back there was Doug building his daughters ice skating rink. Doug was a master gardener with multiple gardens and he also personally hand built and landscaped their beautiful brick front walkway, front, side and back flower and bush landscaping retaining walls as well as their beautiful back patio.
You could see the love he had for his wife and family throughout the years, without fail Doug and Sue seemed to always have that old fashioned newlywed spirit about them as they would romantically stroll through their yard to their back gardens always holding hands.
He was very kind and even when in very much pain himself he would offer a prayer when needed. His last prayer with my family that he lead for a member of my family in our front yards with myself, my oldest boy, his wife Sue and himself had a positive effective outcome the day after he past for another member of my family. Prayers again go out to his wife and family which I include in my rosary prayers. Your neighbor, with love....Elena.

Doug was such a kind soul. Always very welcoming and sweet and friendly. I got to know Doug through his wife, Sue, when I volunteered during college at the nursing home where she worked. She invited me to a weekly Bible study at her home and that is where I met Doug. Each week, she and her family and a few other women in Bible study would gather for dinner at her home. I looked forward to those evenings every week, as their family was always so warm and welcoming and it made missing home so much easier. I will never forget the warmth he had or the stories he told or how kind he was. I am grateful to have met the Magnuson family. My deepest sympathies and warm wishes to them. RIP Doug.
