DOUGLAS BROWN CLEARY
On Thursday, September 22, 2016, Douglas Brown Cleary, of Alexandria, VA passed away suddenly. He is survived by his wife, Ellen McCarthy Cleary of 32 years. Father to daughter, Beth McKenzie Ball (Cleary) and son-in-law, B. Thompson Ball, sons, Matthew Douglas Cleary and Thomas James Cleary. Douglas is survived by a brother, James Cleary, sister-in-law Marilyn Cleary, a sister, Janet VanDeusan, brother-in-law, Thomas McCarthy, sister-in-law, Jessica McCarthy (Tisi), mother-in-law, Martha McCarthy and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Cleary; mother, Anne Cleary (McKenzie) and brother-in-law, Harold VanDeusan. Douglas was born and raised in Detroit, MI and settled in Alexandria after retiring from the Marine Corps. He loved the Northern Virginia area and decided this was the place to call home. Tennis was his sport and he joined Woodlawn Country Club in 1981 only to give up tennis and start playing Golf. Doug, fondly called Dougie, by his fellow golfers in the Bandits and Retired Men, loved to play a round and then have lunch and a beer as they shared their golfing stories of the day. Doug was active with bridge and a weekly poker group at the club where he had no problem taking his friends money. He was an active member at St. James Episcopal Church and The Alexandria Hosts Lions Club.  A Celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, September 28th at 11 a.m., at St. James Episcopal Church, 5614 Old Mill Road, Alexandria, VA 22309. A reception will immediately follow at Mount Vernon Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Douglas's name to the Alexandria Hosts Lions Club, c/o 4801 Kenmore Avenue, Apt# 1105, Alexandria, VA 22304 or St. James Episcopal Church. DEMAINE FUNERAL HOME ALEXANDRIA, is handling the arrangements.www.demainefuneralhomes.com

My most sincere condolences to Ellen and your family. My prayers are with you as you gather to remember Doug in a celebration of his life. Although we cannot know why God called him home at this time and in this manner, Doug's faith has prepared him for this journey. He will watch over you and await that time in the future when you will be reunited.

I am saddened by Doug's death because I know what a bright spot he was in so many lives. To all of you my heartfelt condolences. As a friend first to his older sister, Janet, and then gradually a friend to the entire Cleary family, I understand what a treat he was as a brother and son. I remember their days in "old Redford" where life held so much promise. Douglas was not the proverbial "kid brother nuisance," but a dear heart who was full of fun and teasing. He was always welcome to our house where my mother loved to feed the "tall, gangly boy." jHe respected his sister highly (and her friends, I might add). He had a knack for ingratiating himself to others; therefore was very popular with his peers. I loved him, his giggle, his smile. Rest in peace, Doug, we will all remember the joy you brought us.
