Douglas Dodson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 18, 2012.
After a short battle with cancer, Douglas Dodson went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday afternoon, March 16th, 2012. Doug lived his life to the fullest during his 72 years.

He was born in Rappahannock County, Virginia to Olive and Doug Dodson on October 29th, 1939, although it was later determined his birthday was on October 1st. When asked, his mom said, "I know when I birthed him and it was on October 29th." He applied for Social Security and was happy to use the October 1st. birth date. On June 1st, 1963, Doug married the love of his life, Mary Lou. They built a beautiful home on Hayne Road where they raised four children: Kelly Matthews (Patrick) of Spokane, Wash., Karla Shackelford (Darin) of Akron, Mary Ann George (Brian) of Nashville, Tenn., and Samuel Dodson (Melissa) of Wadsworth. Doug was the proud grandpa of nine grandchildren: Emily, Justin, Bethany, Benjamin, Bradley, Brandon, Madison, Lindsay, and Katie. He also has another granddaughter due in July.

Doug worked at Babcock & Wilcox as a welder for 30 years, traveling to Groton, Conn. and Norfolk Va. to work on nuclear submarines during that time. He also taught at the welding school at B&W in addition to welding classes in the Adult Education Program at Springfield Schools. Early in life, Doug began a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and raised his children in a wonderful Christian home. He and Mary Lou attended Millheim Baptist Church. Doug loved his garden and spent many hours each day from early spring into the late fall growing his bounty, passing on his green beans to many. During the years, sincere friendships were built with many; Doug never knew a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, even those who didn't speak English. Although Doug will be deeply missed by many, he has left a legacy for all who knew him.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Chuck, Bill, and John. He is survived by his brother, Mitchell (Miriam) Dodson; and sisters, Mary (Jim) Tollison, Ruby Kilby, Mildred (Joe) Dickens, and Sheila (Ronald) Wilson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, March 19th, with a memorial service to follow at Millheim Baptist Church, 2661 Hayne Road, Akron, Ohio. Condolences and special memories may be shared online at www.heritagecremation.com.

I just lost my husband on March 6 to Cancer also, so me and my family are experiencing the same loss that you are going through. My Brother-in-law, Doug Dodson
Mary Lou, my little sister, four years younger :( spotted her Doug driving around in a fancy, smancy 1962 red Impala Chevy Convertible, back in, I think it was 1962/63. He lived just down the street with his brother and his family. Just moving up here from Virginia. Yup, she got a ride in that Red car. And I think they knew that they were destined to be Mr.&Mrs. In a few years. Mary Lou graduated June of 63 and they married two or maybe three days later. YES I had to dance in the hog trough. As my younger sister got married before her much older sister. :(
Together they made four Fantastic kids. Kelly, Karla, Mary Ann and Sam.
It took me a little longer to marry Laszlo, as I had him Imported (haha)
Now Mary Lou had her Virginian, who spoke with an accent to us northerners. But I too had a man that had an accent.
I remember one time Doug ask me for a pair of "Plires" and I had to get Mary Lou to tell me what he meant. It was PLIERS! Family dinners were always interesting!
One summer we had Laci's Dad here from Hungary. I was putting on some music and noticed Doug and my father in law just talking up. Storm. I said, Doug do you two know what each other's saying? Doug said heck ya, we're getting everything settled, don't worry about it. Ha, I still don't believe that.
Doug and Lou have had a BEAUTIFUL life together. Many more up's than downs. Doug was a good Brother in law, unless you had a rat in your house and he was scarier than it was! HAHA. So many stories, so many fun times, so many memories.
We're going to miss that southern guy and all the jokes, and tales and stories he told.
Rest In Peace Doug! You were a Good Husband, a Good Daddy, a Good Grandpa, PawPaw, Son in law and a Good Brother in law. But mostly you were Loved.
