Douglas FORSYTH Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Jun. 9 to Jun. 11, 2014.
FORSYTH, Douglas Brayfield
It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of our much loved Doug on Friday, June 6, 2014. Doug will be deeply missed by his caring wife Janet; his children, Andrew and Natalie, his pride and joy whom he loved more than life itself; and the family pet, his beloved dog Annie. Doug will also be missed by his loving parents, Gregory and Nan; his sister Jane (Greg) and their children, Michelle (Brandon) and Stephen; Janet's mother Yvonne Morin; and siblings, Korey (Ian), Kevin (Bonnie) and Joy (Dean); as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Doug was a popular uncle, friend and co-worker. Everyone loved and respected his quick wit, his ease of conversation, and his curiosity and love of learning, which he has instilled in his children. Doug loved all sports, participating in many, and also took great joy in watching his children in many varied activities. He was a proud native Calgarian, attending Henry Wise Wood High School. Doug was a graduate of the University of Lethbridge. Very active in community affairs, Doug was a long-time volunteer with the Calgary Stampede. He was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club and the Glencoe Club. He worked for many years at Pattison Outdoor Advertising where he had a long and distinguished career. Honouring Doug's request, a Private Family Celebration of his life will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Doug's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT and Nunavut, 100, 119 - 14 Street NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6, Tel: 403-264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ab.ca or to the Calgary Humane Society, 4455 110 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2C 2T7, Tel: 403-205-4455, www.calgaryhumane.ca. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting leydens.com.

I have just heard about Doug's passing. I feel so bad for his whole family and close friends. We met back when he worked for Hook Outdoor as a saleman. He would light up a room with his humor and everyone liked him. A great loss for his children to miss out on being raised by such a lovely man.

Nan and Greg, my heart is breaking for you, I am just devastated. There are no words that will comfort you at this time I'm sure, but know that I am thinking of you and sending my love. Doug and I shared a remarkable bond all those years ago, and I am happy to say we remained friends until the end. I had the upmost respect for him, and appreciated his quick wit and sense of humour even when we were at our lowest points. He will leave a hole in the hearts of my children, who are equally devastated that 'Uncle Doug' is gone. He was a big part of our lives, and we will never forget him.
To Janet, Andrew, Natalie, my thoughts are with you. Although I never got to know you, Doug always spoke about all of you with so much pride and love.
Heartfelt sympathies. My thoughts are with you.

I am so saddened by this news. I worked with Doug at Hook and could always hear him walking in the halls with his clicking ankles. Funny what you remember. He was always smiling and easy to work with. I really admired his business style and integrity. I hope his family can heal and find peace and live again. God bless.

June 16, 2014

I met Doug years ago when I went on a trip to Calgary for Pattison Outdoor's Transit Division.

He was a man who garnered your respect immediately, and was all about integrity and ethics....definitely what the world needs more of...

I think back fondly of my trip "out west", and Doug is part of those wonderful memories.

Gone too soon.

Deep condolences to his family.

Just returned from three weeks vacation to hear this very sad news. Doug was a great friend and one of the good guys of the world. He loved to talk about his family, sports, politics, Calgary and about life. I have enjoyed those conversations for nearly 40 years and will deeply miss them. Our thoughts and prayers are with Janet, Andrew and Natalie and with the Forsyth family. Brett Loney and Karen Shewbridge, Halifax.

All of us at Pattison are heart broken with the passing of Doug. Working with Doug again was one of the main reasons I came back to Pattison. Every week through the winter months we would compare our kids hockey stories. We were always laughing. He had such a great sense of humor and he was so proud of his children. He was a good friend and a great mentor. My heartfelt condolences to you Janet, and to the kids. We will miss him, but we have amazing memories and he will always be in our hearts.

One measure of friendship is how easily it is to "pick up" where you left off regardless of the time between meetings. With Doug it was always easy to pick right up again from the U of L days to last year. You will be missed my friend...but not forgotten.

He was a wonderful person and he will be missed greatly by everyone who had the pleasure to know him, and most especially his family.

Dear Janet and Family, in my first year at U of L Doug asked me to join Brett and himself in 1E or what ultimately became "the wine cellar". I remain eternally indebted for that offer and the friendship that followed. The opportunity to have known someone with his strength of character in the face of hardship no one should have to endure remains a gift I will cherish forever. Please accept our most heart felt sympathies for your loss. Deb and Al Pritchard

Cheryl and I have not seen Doug for some time. We were all together at the U of L during some of the best times of our lives, and Doug is part of an awful lot of those great memories. I was always expecting we would get together 'sometime' but we left it too late.
Our deepest condolences to his family

To Janet, Natalie & Andrew + Greg & Nan + Jane & Greg... I struggle to find the appropriate words to express my feelings. I just hope you know how much I, and the rest of "the boys", truly loved Doug, or "Skip" as we affectionately called him. As so many people have written here, Doug was a wonderful human being - kind, caring, honest, integrous, and had a smile and a laugh that lit up the room. Just so you know, several of us "boys" (me, Gary F, Danny J, Cody J, Brian C, Aldo D) got together at my house Mon night and skyped in Josh H (Seattle) and Rob G (Victoria) and we toasted our buddy Doug and told our favorite "Skip" stories. Nan will remember the one about the Caesar salad dressing and the Coke spills... Our love goes out to you all, now and forever, and our hearts will always be full and our lives made richer by having known Doug. Bless him and bless you all.

To all of Doug 'a family, friends and coworkers...my deepest condolences on the passing of such a great guy. I had the privilege to meet and work with Doug during my Pattison days back in the 90's. He was truly a gentleman and someone with whom you could connect with immediately upon meeting him. I will remember his warm personality and infectious smile and laugh...and laughs we had many! Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed by many.

Dear Forsyth Family,

My thoughts are with you all during this unimaginable difficult time. I worked with Doug when I was with the Glenbow Museum. He was always so kind and friendly. When he would reach out to our team to help with something we'd drop everything for him. It was a true pleasure working with him and I'm thankful we had the opportunity.

Doug was a man of integrity...a fellow with great honesty and incredible warmth. A humble man of style with a great smile that matched his tremendous wit. A man you could always believe in and trust.
Someone once asked me...What do like the most about your job with Pattison? My response was simply, the opportunity to give someone the same opportunity that I was given and to pass that onto Doug was a gift from him to me.
My thoughts and condolences to Janet, Andrew, Natalie and the rest of the family.
Doug was a one of a kind guy...a great man taken from us far to soon. One of the best.
