Douglas Hoageson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 26, 2025.
Douglas Eugene Hoageson, 90, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025, in Beachwood, Ohio.

Doug was born on May 27, 1934, in Superior, Wisconsin. He later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated from East High School in the Class of 1953. He went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Fenn College (now Cleveland State University) in 1961.

Doug proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an electrician until 1956, with his most notable service aboard the USS Lake Champlain CVA-39. His time in the Navy remained a defining part of his life, instilling in him a deep sense of discipline and pride that he carried throughout his years.

Professionally, Doug built a successful career as a Sales Engineer specializing in magnet supplier firms from the 1970s until his retirement in 2018. For the last 30 years of his career, he worked from his home office, earning immense respect within his field. His expertise was so valued that even after his position was eliminated due to a corporate sale in his 70s, client demand led to his swift rehiring. Doug's deep understanding of this niche market and his ability to anticipate clients' needs made him indispensable. He later shared his knowledge by mentoring younger salesmen within his company.

Beyond his professional achievements, Doug was a man of great humor, wisdom, and generosity. He had an incredible ability to find joy in any situation and was known for always having a great story to tell. A father figure to many children in the neighborhood, he ensured that no one ever felt left out. His love for family and friends was unwavering-he made sacrifices without hesitation to support those he cared about. Even as life presented challenges in his final days, Doug continued to find reasons to smile and bring happiness to others.

Doug had the intellect of an engineer and the compassion of an angel. He encouraged those around him to live with integrity and make the right choices. His faith was steadfast; he and his beloved wife of 63 years, Marlene, were dedicated members of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church (formerly St. Felicitas Church). Together, they prioritized Catholic education for their children and grandchildren and sang in the church choir for over 30 years while participating in numerous parish events.

A man of many interests, Doug had a deep love for musical theater-both as a spectator and performer. He was also an avid reader who cherished books until failing eyesight made it difficult for him to continue enjoying them as he once had. Ever determined, he found ways to adapt and remain engaged with life despite physical challenges. Additionally, he enjoyed analyzing horse racing handicaps to predict winners-a pastime that reflected both his analytical mind and love for strategy.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Marlene; son Mark (Mary); daughter Karen; sister Anne (late husband Warren); brother Curtis (Diana); grandchildren Lauren, Christopher, and Katie (Edwin); as well as many nieces and nephews who cherished him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harland and Ellen; and brothers Keith (Marian) and Harland.

Doug looked forward to the joys of heaven with peace in his heart, knowing he would be welcomed by the Lord with open arms and reunited with loved ones who had gone before him. His legacy of kindness, integrity, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.

A Funeral Mass will be held on April 3, 2025, at Saint John of the Cross Catholic Church, located at 140 Richmond Road in Euclid, Ohio. The family will welcome friends at the church at 10:30 AM prior to the 11:00 AM Mass.

That mass will also be available online at https://sjceuclid.com/livestream-funerals

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you honor Doug's memory by performing a good deed for someone in need and keeping his family in your prayers.

What a great guy. Pure class and always with that welcoming grin. And the stories! He was a story teller. My favorite was how he nearly ended his marriage on his honeymoon when he got so upset thinking a waitress spilled iced tea on him on purpose. Doug always added a bright spot to any meeting.

Marlene, Mark and family. Our sincere condolences. I worked with Doug starting in 1969 and continued until his retirement. He was a friend, mentor and advisor. The epitome of a professional salesman. Well prepared, groomed, dressed and eager to solve customer issues. Often kind words, a quick story, smile and a wink would be intertwined in conversation. A fine gentleman, Marcia and enjoyed many dinners with Doug. He will be missed--our thoughts and prayers are with you.

more than 60 years ago, Doug graciously accepted my request to be my daughters Godfather. He and Aunt Dorothy adopted Barbara Schneider as their God child. we have done many things together with Marlene and Family. I'm 3 weeks older than her. After my recent hospital stay I am housebound.I wanted so much to say goodbye, to all. but am asking Our LORD to save me a seat near them all. A real loving and caring to this cousin. Julie Beach.

I'm sad to see this news today. I'll always remember him as one of the most gentle human beings I ever met. The times when we were young and hanging out at the house, the way he enjoyed us being there like we were an extension of family. Such a beautiful soul who lived a beautiful life he very much deserved. I'm honored to have known him.

I am so very sorry. Prayers to the family. May his memory be a blessing. All of the attributes described in this obituary are so accurate. One was left off. Mr. Hoageson´s obit is that he was patient. He let us hang out in the garage all day every day working on cars. He would come outside and chat with us. He was so sweet and I was blessed to know him.

I've shared plenty of technical conversations with him as a friend of Mark's. We talked about electronics and the transition from tubes to solid state and how some people struggled with the changeover. That told me that he understood the difficult transition. It also told me that he was able to transition through it and adapt to new technology. His son, Mark, has that same ability.
