HOWLETT , Douglas G. Douglas G. Howlett , of Kingsville, MD, died Saturday July 17, 2010 at Gilchrist of a brain tumor. He was born in Baltimore on February 15, 1957 to the late Capt. Eugene F. Howlett and Lorraine Allmond Howlett of Kingsville. He sailed to and from Africa and New York aboard the "African Sun". At age 23, Doug was accepted into the Association of Maryland Pilots. He received advanced training at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies and obtained his Master and First Class Pilot's license. He served almost 30 years guiding nearly 3,200 ships up and down the Chesapeake Bay from Cape Henry, VA to Baltimore and through the C&D Canal. Doug was an avid outdoor enthusiast. He loved fishing with friends, golfing in Ocean City, Florida and Hawaii, and scuba diving in the Caribbean. He was also a voracious reader who had a passion for history. Doug was a kind and gentle soul who imprinted himself in the minds of all who knew and loved him. Doug is survived by his mother, A. As the one year anniversary of Doug's passing approaches, I remember him as my first roommate at MMA in 1975. May your fond memories of Doug bring you peace, and the love of God bring him joy.

My thoughts are with the Howlett family. I knew Doug since our days at Maine Maritime. We spent many an hour making the trek to Castine. He was a great mentor, pilot and friend. We will miss him.

It is a very sad and sorrowful time when a mother has to bury her son. As a mother my heart and prayers go out to the Howlett family. May the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort strengthen and comfort you during this most diffult time.
