Douglas McCormick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 11, 2024.
Ligonier - It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the death of Douglas Charles McCormick, son of Joyce and William S McCormick. He left our physical world on November 10, 2024, at age 72 after a sudden diagnosis and brave acceptance of metastatic cancer. Doug lived a full life, most of which was lived in Silver Lake and Hudson Ohio.

In addition to building a lovely home in Hudson, he owned and maintained Brewster Mansion for 25 years where he also operated McCormick Place, Picture Framing and Art Gallery. Prior to the Hudson location, he was the proprietor of the Gift and Frame shop in Stow, Ohio where he adorned many local homes with beautiful handmade frames the charming work of Americana artist, Charles Wysocki.

Doug was a skilled and creative man, completing many home renovations in Hudson, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and finally giving the hammer a rest after completing a cabin renovation in Pennsylvania. Creating and completing was his mantra. Allison counted at least a dozen tape measures in his many tool bags. Doug did not intentionally collect anything but was a sentimentalist keeping greeting cards from loved ones over the years.

Douglas McCormick is survived by his wife, Allison, of 28 years, two sons Mike and Matt, one daughter, Paige, and four grandchildren. Just last season he was teaching Lucy, age three and a half, to downhill ski and ice skate. Doug has three surviving siblings, Mark, Patty (Dupre), and Lyn (Weiss) along with nine surviving nieces and nephews. We envision Doug joining his beloved younger brother, John McCormick, along with his deceased niece and nephew, in reserved seats for the most loved people on the planet.

In honor of his wishes, there will be no service and Doug's ashes will join the earth on their woodsy Ligonier cabin property with his big black furry friend, Marlena. A Norway Spruce was selected by Doug and Allison to celebrate his love of the outdoors, respect for nature and all living things.

Thank you to everyone for your friendships, generosity, thoughts and prayers. Always strive to live a great life, making yourself and others happy.

I remember meeting Douglas the first time at a birthday party for Paige. I think what struck me first about Douglas was the smile on his face, and most importantly, Allison´s face. He was special and made everyone feel like an old friend. Over the years, we created a collection of Wysocki pictures which we still have hung and cherish in our home thanks to Douglas! Brian & I were always astounded by Douglas´s handiwork. Seemed to us he could do just about anything. The thing that was most evident is the love he had for his family and friends. We continue to send our love and prayers to all those he loved. We know how deeply he will be missed.

Doug and my husband Jim grew up together and they were very good friends. I always enjoyed the many stories of their joint adventures. And Allison and Doug were very supportive of our marriage and I felt accepted into their close friendship. But before we married, Doug took me aside and asked me to be good to his friend Jim. I was so impressed by his love and loyalty to Jim. Who wouldn´t want a friend like that? Since that time the four of us have had many wonderful times together.
My heart goes out to all who are grieving today for the loss of this good man. In time our many fond memories of Doug will comfort us until we see him again.

Allison and family, I am so very, very sorry for your loss. Doug was one of my dearest and oldest friends and I will miss him forever. From early grade school, through high school and as roommates in college we created lots of great memories. From goose in the esquires, to summers
at the farm and fun times on the water and on the snow he was always a great friend to spend time with. I´ll always remember his laugh and mischievous smile. You always knew he was up to something. I will always smile when I think of him and will miss him for the rest of my life. Love and condolences to you and the whole family Allison.

Doug and Allison were our neighbors in St. Augustine Beach several years ago and meeting them was like reuniting with old friends. Doug was such an interesting and knowledgeable person and could hold a conversation on any subject. And boy did he like to laugh! Be it on our porch or theirs, more than a few neighbors would ask the next day what was so funny. Doug was truly a gentleman and one of the nicest guys we've ever met. Anyone who spent even a little time with Doug knew how much he loved Allison and their family. He will be missed.

The first time I met Doug (in 2007), he was building his house in Salida, literally stone-by-stone. He patiently gathered them from his beautiful mountain lot then created an incredible oasis. In the past 17 years of friendship with Doug and Allison, I've seen him refurbish several homes to transform them into true havens of comfort and serenity and deep abiding love. Quiet and introspective, Doug expresses his love and generosity through creative actions. I was honored to have known his friendship all these years. He will be so missed!!

Oh boy did we have fun with Doug! He had such a gentle way about him but that twinkle in his eye let us know that he was up for laughs. His creativity and ingenuity was truly remarkable. A gifted craftsman left his mark throughout the states in his many homes. He was my first call whenever I needed a second opinion. He and Allison made quite the team with house flipping! My heart aches for Allison and their families. He will be missed.

We are heartbroken at the news of Douglas´s passing. We watched him turn the house next door into a beautiful home for your family. He was so kind to our kids, cheering on Charlie´s hockey games and supporting his golf habits! You are wonderful neighbors and dear friends and we will always miss him.

Sorry for your loss, Uncle Douglas will be greatly missed. One of my earliest and greatest memories of him was turning the car into a rocket ship as a kid and announcing blast off at every stoplight - a tradition I have carried on with little Carly, who already shows the same joy in response that Douglas brought me over the years.

I'm sorry for your loss.

My unforgettable memory was his tiny garage workshop. It was the most organized grampa like thing I've seen.
