I'm so sorry for the passing of your Dad! Your Mom and Dad visited us on numerous occasions in Colorado and also we were great friends of Joe and Patti!

Doug was mentor and friend to whom I owe my career trajectory. He saw something that even I was not fully aware of at the time and took a chance on me. In the book Tom Sawyer while painting a fence, it was said that if you hate what you're doing its work, and if you like what you're doing its play. Working with Doug, although serious, was play. I enjoyed every minute of it and one could not have had a better mentor who always had his back. Thank you Doug, and rest in peace.

First met Doug at age 10 playing Little League baseball. I was friends with him through high school and as a matter of fact, went with him and two others for an interview session at Boston College with Father Paul McCarrick who was a Boston College alumnus. I can see from previous messages that he remained a genuinely a good guy.

One of the highlights of a 55-year friendship with Doug, Chris, JD and Ellen was our Father-Son golf trip to Scotland. Doug was smart, caring, competitive, loyal, dependable, funny, and loved golf. A great friend since we met at Apawamis in 1970. Thinking of you and Chris together again warms my heart. RIP. Bob

Doug, our hearts are broken!

Meeting you at the pool of the Village Spires in Vero Beach in January 2016 was the beginning of a very special & cherished friendship.

For the past 10 years what great times & wonderful & special memories you have given us (Bent Pine, The Tides & numerous other restaurant lunches & dinners, daily conversations at the pool, NY Mets baseball games in Port St. Lucie, the Village Spires clubhouse events, your condo dinner parties (DWD), your 80th Birthday Party, etc., etc.

How grateful we were to have you as a friend and we will miss your intelligence & guidance, generosity, humor, friendship, and that big smile of yours!

As sad as we are, we find comfort knowing that you are reunited with your son, Chris after that tragic day and you are finally pain-free and at peace.

Until we meet again, RIP, our cherished friend.

Dear JD, Gina, Jaden, Jack, Cheryl and Ellen, I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Doug´s passing. My heart goes out to all of you.

Mello Man, during the dark days of COVID when my father was dying, you were the rock he leaned on and your sense of humor kept him smiling.

RIP, your kindness will be missed

To my fellow friend and Apawamis member, you will be missed. To the Mello family, another opportunity to extend my condolences to you. Doug was a straight shooter and someone who was liked by all. God has taken you now to join the ranks of Cassin, Leddy, Summa, Voss and others that you knew so well. And of course, you now get your reunion with your son Chris. As I said to you on every 9/11 since 2001, we will never forget and God Bless the Mello Family.

Doug was a great man and mentor. I enjoyed the time I spent with him and appreciated his sage advice and wisdom.

Doug was a good friend and golfing buddy of my father, Paul Hargarten. Many jokes were told and laughter was heard while playing golf together at Bent Pine Golf Club. I had the privilege of getting to know Doug more so over the years, because of Childcare Resources of Indian River County, which he and I both supported. Doug is a gentle soul, who showed love and kindness to the children of the school, as well as to everyone he came in contact with. He will truly be missed. God bless you, Doug Mello.

Words cannot express the sadness I feel to not have my friend at the Spires anymore. My late husband standing behind Doug at his birthday party and I so enjoyed Doug´s life stories and his lust for life. He made us laugh and we grieved with him for the loss of his son Christopher.We felt blessed knowing Doug. May he rest in peace
