Douglas Mello Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 10, 2025.
Douglas J. Mello (11/17/1942 – 3/10/2025)

Douglas Joseph Mello, 82, of Rye, New York and Vero Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025 after a short illness.

Doug graduated from Boston College in 1965 and went on to a long and successful career at the former New York Telephone Company, now Verizon. He was an accomplished and respected business leader who held numerous senior management positions during his career. His favorite role, however, was being a coach and mentor to several hundred grateful employees. Doug retired from Verizon in 1999 and continued to stay engaged, serving as a director on many corporate boards in the telecommunications industry. He also brought his business acumen and experience to many nonprofit organizations.

Doug lost his youngest son Christopher in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. After Chris died, Doug's primary mission in retirement was to honor Chris' memory through positive initiatives. His work revolved around impactful grants made to nonprofit organizations through the Retik-Mello Foundation (www.retikmellofoundation.org), named after Chris and his Alta Communications mentor David Retik, who was traveling with Chris on that fateful day. Doug was also the founder and chairperson of the Christopher Mello Foundation, a nonprofit organization that gives two scholarships annually in Chris' name to senior football players from Rye and Harrison High Schools, awarded each year at 'The Game' between the two rival teams.

Doug was born in Fall River, Massachusetts and was a proud graduate of Durfee High School, class of 1961. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Alice (Ponte) Mello. Doug is survived by his son, John Douglas (J.D.) Mello, his daughter-in-law, Gina, and his two beloved grandchildren, Jaden, a sophomore at the University of Virginia, and Jack, a sophomore at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut. He is also survived by his wife, Ellen Mooney Mello, of Vero Beach, Florida and Greenwich, Connecticut. While separated for many years, Doug and Ellen remained close and devoted friends. He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl (Mello), and her husband, Michael Popolano, of Melbourne, Florida.

Doug was a longtime member of The Apawamis Club and Shenorock Shore Club of Rye, New York, and Bent Pine Golf Club of Vero Beach, Florida. His vast circle of friends around the world will miss Doug's warm personality, friendship, generosity, and quick wit. Services will be held privately for his family.
We invite family, friends, and former colleagues of Doug's to join us for a celebration of his life on Saturday, June 21st from 3-5pm at the Shenorock Shore Club (475 Stuyvesant Avenue) in Rye, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made online or via check to the Christopher Mello Foundation (chrismellofoundation.com; 66 Milton

Road, Unit E31, Rye, New York 10580).

Doug was mentor and friend to whom I owe my career trajectory. He saw something that even I was not fully aware of at the time and took a chance on me. In the book Tom Sawyer while painting a fence, it was said that if you hate what you're doing its work, and if you like what you're doing its play. Working with Doug, although serious, was play. I enjoyed every minute of it and one could not have had a better mentor who always had his back. Thank you Doug, and rest in peace.

Ellen, JD and Family,

Doug was a great friend, leader and mentor. I will never forget our times together cheering on our Eagles... and our tailgates. He will be missed. Prayers for Doug and the family. Love from Kevin Shine and Family.

First met Doug at age 10 playing Little League baseball. I was friends with him through high school and as a matter of fact, went with him and two others for an interview session at Boston College with Father Paul McCarrick who was a Boston College alumnus. I can see from previous messages that he remained a genuinely a good guy.

One of the highlights of a 55-year friendship with Doug, Chris, JD and Ellen was our Father-Son golf trip to Scotland. Doug was smart, caring, competitive, loyal, dependable, funny, and loved golf. A great friend since we met at Apawamis in 1970. Thinking of you and Chris together again warms my heart. RIP. Bob

Had the pleasure to work for Doug in the 90s and expressed our mutual frustration with the NY Jets. He was always kind. The world lost a good man.

Doug, Char and I were honoured to be included in your sphere of friends. We will always remember you: holding court at the Spires, as the Mayor of the pool area; entertaining us endlessly at The Tides with your 'war stories'; laughing heartily over a wide variety of issues; and doing all you could to make both The Spires and Bent Pine memorable places to find ourselves. We lift a glass to your kindness and your passion for reading.
Forever in our hearts. John and Charlotte

Doug, our hearts are broken!

Meeting you at the pool of the Village Spires in Vero Beach in January 2016 was the beginning of a very special & cherished friendship.

For the past 10 years what great times & wonderful & special memories you have given us (Bent Pine, The Tides & numerous other restaurant lunches & dinners, daily conversations at the pool, NY Mets baseball games in Port St. Lucie, the Village Spires clubhouse events, your condo dinner parties (DWD), your 80th Birthday Party, etc., etc.

How grateful we were to have you as a friend and we will miss your intelligence & guidance, generosity, humor, friendship, and that big smile of yours!

As sad as we are, we find comfort knowing that you are reunited with your son, Chris after that tragic day and you are finally pain-free and at peace.

Until we meet again, RIP, our cherished friend.

With Love,
Ron & Patti Shelli

Mello Man, during the dark days of COVID when my father was dying, you were the rock he leaned on and your sense of humor kept him smiling.
It makes me smile to think you might be having a laugh together now.
You were the best. With much love, Susan and Joseph Snyder and for my dad RADM George Ellis.

To my fellow friend and Apawamis member, you will be missed. To the Mello family, another opportunity to extend my condolences to you. Doug was a straight shooter and someone who was liked by all. God has taken you now to join the ranks of Cassin, Leddy, Summa, Voss and others that you knew so well. And of course, you now get your reunion with your son Chris. As I said to you on every 9/11 since 2001, we will never forget and God Bless the Mello Family.

Doug was a good friend and golfing buddy of my father, Paul Hargarten. Many jokes were told and laughter was heard while playing golf together at Bent Pine Golf Club. I had the privilege of getting to know Doug more so over the years, because of Childcare Resources of Indian River County, which he and I both supported. Doug is a gentle soul, who showed love and kindness to the children of the school, as well as to everyone he came in contact with. He will truly be missed. God bless you, Doug Mello.

Words cannot express the sadness I feel to not have my friend at the Spires anymore. My late husband standing behind Doug at his birthday party and I so enjoyed Doug´s life stories and his lust for life. He made us laugh and we grieved with him for the loss of his son Christopher. We felt blessed knowing Doug. May he rest in peace
