Douglas Pendry Obituary

Published by PL-North from Jun. 15 to Jun. 18, 2015.
Douglas John Pendry, co-owner of TherapyEd, located in Evanston died in a car accident on June 11th. He was born March 28th, 1962 in Huntington, NY. In 1973 he moved to Winnetka where he graduated from New Trier High School in 1980. While at New Trier he starred in basketball and developed lifelong friendships. He attended Pomona College where he continued his basketball career under Coach Gregg Popovich and graduated in 1985. After college he worked as a carpenter and fished professionally for salmon in Alaska. He returned to Evanston in 1990 to work in the family business, Health Professionals International, and together with his brother Tom managed HPI and TherapyEd. In 1994 he married Patricia Arnold with whom he had four children: Sebastian, 20, Sabine, 18, Tim, 16, and Luc, 10. With the love of his life Patricia, Doug created a fulfilling life as a dedicated, attentive, and adventurous father, surrounding his children with love, joy, and courage. He served as President of the Winnetka Paddle Tennis Club where he was instrumental in building the new paddle tennis hut. His passion for basketball has been passed on to his children and to the Panthers he coached at Pope John in Evanston. In 2008, the family moved to Pullman, WA where he once again coached his children's basketball team, the Hawks. He led a spectacular life. He believed in the importance of play, the value of community, the beauty of literature, and loving his family fiercely and joyously. His warm embrace, mischievous Cheshire cat grin, and intellectual curiosity were a gift to all. He will be remembered for his hats and stories, his strong opinions, his integrity and dignity, his skill at poker, and his love of golf and basketball. He will be dearly missed as a father, brother, son, and friend. He is survived by his wife Patricia, his children Sebastian, Sabine, Tim and Luc, his mother Peg, his siblings: Chris, Betsi, Jim, Tom, and Amy and by his "brothers from another mother." Visitation will be held 4:30 to 9:00 pm on Sunday, June 14, at St Nicholas Church, 860 Ridge Rd, Evanston. The funeral, also at St Nicholas Church, will be held on Monday, at 9:30 am. Donations may be made to the Pendry Children Education Fund, c/o Law Offices of Mari-Kay Zaraza P.C., 500 Davis Street, Suite 512, Evanston, IL 60201.

Patricia,

We met once, a few years ago over dinner in San Francisco. Doug was my Pomona College, sophomore year roommate. We decided to combine room numbers to get a suite in Smiley dorm. The year before, we lived in adjacent halls, and discovered, I think, that we would be compatible roommates as we had different interests, and friends, but they all overlapped. It did work. I lost touch with Doug over the years. Reading the recollections of his strong views and defense of his positions, and his fierce love for his family, was no surprise. The hat thing I don't remember. Strength and serenity Patricia, I wish those for you.

Dear Patricia & Family: My sincerest condolences on the loss of your dear husband and father, Doug. I will always remember my initial meeting with your family at Lincoln Middle School when you first moved to Pullman, and how dapper I thought Doug was in his fedora (all of the way from Chicago!). I will always remember his kindness and gentle manner, but especially how fiercely he loved his children and advocated for them. I know he will be deeply missed by you all. I am so sorry for your loss.

Doug and I were friends for about 20 years, we got to be good buddies through paddle and later on golf. There was no better guy to hang out with and just have fun with then DP. He was competitive but he enjoyed the camaraderie with sports more than the game itself. Don't get me wrong he liked to win, and so do I but we both understood winning is not everything and it's about the fun you have while competing. Trash talk and one line zingers were his specialty, he could give it out but he could also take it. The old saying goes you really get to know a person when you play a round a golf. They bare their soul to you as golf is a frustrating sport, you miss way more than you make. I got to know Doug really well through the game of golf, we played over 100 rounds together and we went on some golf trips to pebble beach and scotland. I do know he loved his family very much, he talked about them often after a round of golf over dinner and a beer. He was a down to earth guy who loved family, friends and sports. We often talked about business as he was a small business owner, and he was always interested to find out what worked and what did not work in my business. He loved to share ideas whether a golf tip or business idea. He was a great guy to be around someone who you can trust and someone who had your back. They don't come along much better than DP. DP will be missed by all who knew him. I got one piece of advice for the guys up in heaven with him, don't play poker with him as you will lose.

Patricia, Sebastian, Sabine, Tim and Luc, I will never look at a nice pair of shoes or stylish hat, without thinking of Doug Pendry. Loved how he did everything with class, how he spoke and interacted with his family was precious. I hope the memories give you strength, those good qualities will live on through you, when you smile, he is smiling. May you find peace knowing he is resting in peace. Sending our love, Jeff, Alyce, Marty and Jared Anderson
