Douglas Sparks Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle on Jun. 21, 2013.
Douglas Arlan Sparks, 81, passed away at his home in Houston on Sunday, June 9, 2013. Survived by children: Sue (Ken) Leasure, Doug ( Nancy) Sparks, Bill (Lauren) Sparks, Vicki Mancuso (Jon Moses); grandchildren: Lance (Ashley), Kevin and Kelly Leasure; great granddaughter: Aqua Leasure; twin brother Donald Sparks and younger brother Charles Sparks.
Doug was a Little League coach at the Oaks Dad's Club for many years and rarely missed a school function involving one of his children. Doug lost his wife Barbara in April 2009 after 58 years of marriage. At their 50th anniversary party hosted by daughter Vicki Mancuso, at least a dozen of the old neighborhood kids were on hand to honor Doug and Barbara for their mentoring through the years.
Doug was an avid golfer who took up the game upon retirement from Southwestern Bell. He was most proud of his 3 holes-in-one, 2 eagles and 1 double eagle. Doug played his last nine holes in Sarasota Florida 6 weeks before his death scoring a 50. He commented that the trip was the best vacation he had ever taken. He was putting balls in the family room until late May.
Doug and the family wish to thank Memorial-Hermann Memorial City, Dr. Joel Abramowitz and the wonderful and highly skilled crew at Hematology Oncology Associates, Dr. Cole T. Thomson and long time friend Dr. George Thomas Keith. A very special thank you goes out to Dr. Danny Jee of Steeplechase Optical whose research of image relocation and craft of prismatic lenses for stroke victims that have lost peripheral vision kept Doug safe from obstacles and allowed him to keep swinging a golf club almost to the end.
Graveside service June 29 at 9:00 a.m. at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

I'm betting that Doug Sparks has already formed his own Little League football team and coaching 'em up right now. Some of my fondest memories are practices at the American Legion Field back in the mid-60's and those awesome fall Saturdays at The Oaks Dads Club on TC Jester. What a great coach Doug Sparks was on and off the field! He was a leader, a mentor, a fan, a friend, an encourager, a great inspiration, a great dad to his kids, and someone we always respected and admired. And...he was my first coach. Thank you Coach Doug Sparks! You have made a great and positive impact on so many of us.
