Dr. Benjamin Webster Champion, 86, of Media, PA and former long-time resident of Berwyn went to be with the Lord on January 13, 2023. He was born in Northeast Philadelphia, PA on November 13, 1936 to the late John and Edith Champion. Ben was the beloved husband of the late Susanne Speers Champion, with whom he shared 55 cherished years.
Dr. Champion was the devoted father to B. Todd Champion, Laura C. Taylor (Aaron), and Andrew W. Champion (Layne) and beloved grandfather to Willow and Ava. Ben was predeceased by his beloved wife, Susanne and brother, David Champion.
Ben completed his undergraduate in Education at Eastern University, in St. Davids, PA in 1959; then continued his education at Temple University earning his Doctorate in Educational Psychology. As an educator, Dr. Champion taught at the Devereux School in Berwyn (1959-1962), Ardmore Junior High in Lower Merion (1962-1964), The Pathway School in Norristown (1964-1998) advancing to be the Education Director there, before finishing his career as the Education Director at the Melmark School in Berwyn (1998-2002). In 2002, the Arc of Delaware County awarded him the educator of the year for his support of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Dr. Champion touched the lives of countless students and their families throughout his distinguished career. He brought much joy and humor, especially at events where he would bring his love of Elvis to life and dress the part! He also loved to interact with the students and staff, often wearing whimsical ties to encourage conversation.
Ben and his wife devoted their lives to serving the Lord and were long time members of Paoli Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and Stephen Ministry leader. He was a devoted follower of Jesus, reading his bible daily, sharing verses and Godly wisdom. Ben enjoyed listening to hymns and Disney songs to brighten his days. His passion for learning also included psychology and leadership. He was a prolific reader and loved to share what he learned.
Ben was a friend to many and loved in the community. He rarely met anyone who remained a stranger. Ben opened his home to family and friends, providing encouragement and advocacy for many people throughout his life. He will be remembered for his faith in Christ, loving kindness, and genuine interest in and affection for people from all walks of life.
Relatives, friends, colleagues, and former students please join us to celebrate Dr. Champion’s life on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Paoli Presbyterian Church, 225 South Valley Road Paoli, PA. So many happy memories of working with Ben from 1975-1984. I learned so much from him. He was an amazing mentor for developing my writing skills. He really was a great teacher. God Bless!

Dick and I are very sorry that we will not be able to attend the services being held today to remember Ben. We loved Ben dearly. He was a kind and gentle man. We always enjoyed Ben's sense of humor and smile. We grieve but not as those without hope because we know that we will indeed see Ben again. We will continue to pray for comfort for all in this time of sorrow. Love and prayers, Dick and Debbie Speers
