Dr. David Holloway Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 20, 2024.
Memphis - Dr. David Hoyt Holloway II, 87, after a brief illness passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 2, 2024. He was a pioneer of cardiology and modern treatment of heart disease in the Midsouth who dedicated his life to healing and helping others. Dr. Holloway was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and dedicated physician whose kindness, generosity, Southern charm and wry sense of humor will be deeply missed by many.

Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he was a graduate of Chattanooga City High, Class of 1955, where he met the love of his life Lynn while both played in the marching band. After graduating from the University of Chattanooga with a B.A. in Biology, he finished first in his class to earn his MD from the University of Tennessee in Memphis. An internship in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina was followed by a Residency in Internal Medicine at the same facility. In 1966, he was named Fellow in Cardiovascular Disease at Duke University Medical Center.

While in medical school, he married Lynn King of Chattanooga. The pair relocated from UT in Memphis to Duke University in Durham NC, and with their young children, on to San Antonio, TX. There he was a flight doctor in the Air Force researching the effects of zero gravity on pilots. He was recruited by Drs Stern and moved back with his family to Memphis in 1969 when he began his long tenure with Stern Cardiovascular Clinic.

Professionally, Dr. Holloway was a nationally recognized cardiologist. His appointments included Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis; Chief of Staff; President of Medical Staff; and Board of Trustees at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis.

Dr Holloway saw patients daily in clinic and at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was President of Stern Cardiovascular Center until age 81 when he passed the onus to his colleague and friend Dr Steven Gubin. While his practice was based in Memphis, he also held licensure in Mississippi. He loved to see his patients in rural areas - many times happily accepting homemade jam or honey as payment.

He practiced for 52 years before he retired at age 84 due to the changes in the practice of medicine caused by COVID.

He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and also the American College of Physicians. He was a long-time and devoted member of Christ Methodist Church.

David and his wife Lynn were active in supporting several Memphis charities including the Memphis Food Bank, the Church Health Center, and the Neighborhood Christian Center. When not in his office or with patients, Dr. Holloway could be found spending time with his family on or near the water at Pickwick Lake and Sanibel Island, FL; attending classical music concerts and events; nurturing his vegetable garden; making pilgrimages to Costco; ordering countless useful presents for his family from Temu; perfecting the ultimate cup of dark roast coffee; and occasionally indulging in beloved Memphis fare like Huey's, Gus' Fried Chicken, Corky's Barbecue, and his very favorite and mainstay of his diet, double glazed donuts from Gibson's Donuts.

He is predeceased by his parents, David Hoyt Holloway, Sr and Mabel Touchstone Holloway. He is survived by his wife of 64years, Lynn King Holloway; his sister Jane Holloway Skelton of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; son David Holloway III (Valerie) of Franklin Tn; daughter Janet Holloway Cousar (David- decd) of Memphis and daughter Susan Holloway of Memphis.
