Dr. Donald Moely Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 28, 2023.

Dr. Donald K Moely, formerly of Stevensville, MI, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, March 23, 2023. He was born on October 29, 1941 in Madison, WI to Diehl and Mildred Moely.

Doc, as he was affectionally called, completed his bachelors degree at University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and earned his Masters and Doctorate in Music Education from Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL.

He and his wife Eloise (Ellie) Moely shared 57 years of loving memories together, and were blessed with a daughter, Donelle Moely-Bronstein, and son, Michael Moely.

Doc began his postdoctoral career as Director of Bands for Winona State University, directing and touring with the Symphonic Band.

Later, he became Head of the Music Department, at Lake Michigan College (LMC), where he directed the Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Show Choir, and taught brass and piano lessons. He and Ellie (who also worked at the college) received the Bernard Radde Award, given by the Board of Trustees; presented annually to outstanding contributors for the development of LMC. During his European music tour, he featured LMC’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Show Choir. Doc continued his postdoctoral studies, in Trumpet and Music Education/Administration, at North Texas State University. He was subsequently granted a sabbatical leave, from LMC, to study Trumpet and Orchestral Conducting at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

Doc was also the Director of Choirs at John Adams High School in South Bend, IN, loving his many students over the years. During his 35 years as director of the St. Joseph Municipal Band, he found much joy in working with the talented band members and performing for the dedicated concert attendees. Doc retired at the end of the Summer Concert Series, in 2022, to enjoy his 3 year old grandson, who can already buzz on the trumpet and play keys on the piano. (The City of St Joseph has concerts from 2022 on You Tube for your listening enjoyment.)

During his music career, Doc was also the former organist for Saron Lutheran Church for many years.

He is survived by his partner in life, Eloise, his son, Michael (Laura) Moely, his long-awaited grandson Matthew Moely. His sister-in-law Marie Moely, cousin, Virginia Moely, nieces Christine (Robert) Steinert and Laura (Richard) Thomas, nephews Greg (Joan) Moely, and Todd Moely. Grand nieces and nephews, Steven (Julie) Steinert, and Stephanie (Ben) Reuter and Jillian, Thomas, and Michael S.Moely and Rowan and Carys Thomas.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother Calvin Moely, cousin Russell Moely, and dear daughter Donelle Moely-Bronstein.

A private service will be held this summer, at the Wisconsin Memorial Park Chapel Brookfield, WI.

Memorial contributions towards a St Joseph Municipal Band plaque honoring his 35 years of making music with the band for the city of St Joseph audiences listening enjoyment will be accepted by the City of St Joseph. Please send contributions to: The City of St Joseph Municipal Band Fund, 700 Broad St, St Joseph, MI 49085

So sorry to hear of Donald's passing. Don & I go way back.... at Sunday School, probably before 1st grade. Shared many great times with Don and the Meyer twins, John & Joe, throughout our high school years! My condolences to Elle, Michael and the entire family.

Thank you Doc for building an amazing choral program at Adams! It was such a privilege to honor you at our annual Spring Fling concert. We heard such amazing stories of how you touched your former students' lives through music. We know you were looking down and listening with joy in your heart as the alumni choir performed for their beloved Doc once more.

Don will be missed by those who knew and loved him. I will always remember his smile, kindness, patience, and goodwill towards others. His love, and talent for music was a gift he shared with the world. What was always heartwarming was his love and support for his family. Whenever he was in Ellie’s presence, you could feel the love they shared. Don made a difference in the world, and his memory will live on.

Doc was a wonderful teacher and friend to everyone he taught. He was kind and exuberant and left his mark on the heart of everyone he met. I am thankful to have met him and to have learned from him. He may be gone but his memory lives on in the students who loved him. He was my absolute favorite teacher throughout my entire academic career and taught me to believe in myself and to embrace toe joy music can bring. He will forever hold a song in our hearts.

Dear Ellie & family,
We are so sorry to hear the sad news of Don's passing. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. We will remember him as a talented musician and conductor; we always enjoyed his delightful concerts. Through Linda's friendship with Ellie, the four of us became great friends, recently discovering that we share a wedding anniversary date. Don was a gracious host, intelligent conversationalist, and master card player of "I'm Perfect." He was a wonderful listener, giving his total attention. He gave so much to his community and his enthusiasm to all things. He was a man we were honored to know and call a friend.

I'm sure the band in heaven was playing "Strike Up the Band" when Doc. passed through the Pearly Gates. I was shocked to read of his passing. I waited all year for the Saint Joseph Municipal Band concerts and of course Doc. I loved his sense of humor and world class talents and gifts. I always sat up front and was a member of his fan club. Doc. brought so much joy to my life. I will always remember the concert where he had a twinkle in his eye as he passed his baton to his precious and adorable grandson. I always enjoyed the playing of the college fight songs during the closing concert of the summer. My heart goes out to his lovely wife, Ellie, and the Moely family. Know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for the memories Doc.! I promise to honor and remember you always by keeping a song in my heart.

Dear Doc my heart Is very heavy today because you aren’t here. You where a teacher, mentor, father. Even when I didn’t believe in myself you did. There where times where I’d want to give up and you wouldn’t let me. I’ll never forget the lessons about life that you taught me. I’ll never forget the first time I met Michael’s Dad. Dr. Moely came to my 2nd grade class and taught the class about the trumpet and played Star-wars for us. Beforehand, Michael told me my Dad and his Dad went to grade school together. I thought Michael was pulling my leg. Once I mentioned it to my Dad, Keith Wegner, sure enough, it was true. Dr. Moely was a great guy and I have many great memories of him ranging from teaching our class, to conductor awesome music in St.Joseph to having dinners and watching hime shine about his proud new grandson. He will be missed. Thoughts and prayers to the rest of the family.

Doc Moely was my dear friend, confidant, neighbor, role model and sweet presence in my life. When I was negotiating my teenage years with a challenging home situation he was a solid, loving adult presence in my life. The Moely's invited me into their lives where I had the privilege of babysitting Donelle, and then Michael. I was honored to share family times with them. Their home was always open and full of love. It was a haven for me. Doc and Ellie genuinely and deeply cared about me, my life, and the things that mattered to me.

While in high school, I was privileged to play oboe with the LMC band on their European trip. What an experience! This was particularly poignant since Doc had first started me on the oboe years before. (He passed me on to an oboist later, but remained my piano teacher.) He even trusted me to be Donelle's first piano teacher. His teaching gifts were extraordinary--not only because of his musical gifts and talents, but also because all he did was grounded in loving kindness and support.

In my adult years, I settled in California, so our contact diminished--but still the family visited me in Berkeley and later in Mountain View as I had my first child. Always, Doc was full of interest and kindness; curiosity and support. He was a man of grace and love.

My life has been--and continues to be--enriched by the example Doc & Ellie showed me of loving kindness and how that can be lived out in family and community. His influence extends beyond measure.

Uncle Don was always that fun Uncle that you couldn't wait to be around. Even though I didn't get to see him that much, especially as we grew older, he was always enthusiastic to see me and catch up on my life and all of the details. I guess that is what I will never forget about him: Uncle Don had a love for life and the people around him. He made you feel that life was an exciting journey and no matter what, it was "Awesome!". I think that aspect of him came through the expression of his musical talents so clearly, whether playing or conducting.

His positivity, joy, and love for those around him will be his legacy. I will miss you Uncle Don. My deepest sympathies for your loss Aunt El and Cousin Michael. Prayers lifted for peace and comfort for you both and the family.

Doc was a great friend, mentor, and music professor during my time at LMC; 1974-1976. I studied both trumpet and conducting under his guidance. He encouraged me to consider music as a lifetime vocation, which I accomplished serving 20 years in the US Army Band. I completed my military career in 1996 at Fort Jackson, SC as the Enlisted Bandleader. His inspiration also had an impact on my spiritual life, which set the stage for
serving 20 years as a church music director. I am indebted to his dedication, professionalism, and wisdom that provided such a strong foundation in my career and adult life.

What can I say about Doc that people don't already know. Doc was such an inspiration in my life. He allowed me at a young age to grow and make mistakes-and fix the ones I could. I was a not as out-going before high school and lacked a lot of confidence. If it wasn't for Doc I don't know where or what I would be doing today. Thank you Doc for helping me to grow as a person and allowing me to be a small part of your legacy!

Loved that guy.
He taught my how to play jazz and improvise on the trombone.
Always patient with me.
I remember jazz practice. The band would vamp while different musicians would step up to solo.
I jumped in every chance I could get. One day, Doc pulled me aside and asked why I kept jumping in. He said I sounded terrible.
I said, "I know. But, everytime I hit a bad note or go in the wrong direction I make a mental note of it. Once I finish learning all the mistakes all that is left is good jazz."
With his patience, guidance and constant encouragement I became a featured jazz soloist. Sat in with Woody Herman's band, Dominic Spera and more.
Changed my major from science to music and turned professional. Touring the US for many years and then taking my trombone on mission trips. Playing in every country in Central America, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic and India.

He was an inspiration and a friend.

Oh, I´m so, SO sorry for his passing. I took private lessons from him in 1978 - 1983, and and because of timing, my lesson fell shortly after supper. Doc always came in with an apple! He helped me to reach up and out, as a musician, and I´ll NEVER forget that. I still practice the chromatic scales he drove into my soul, and pushed me to do better. There will never be another "Doc".

I am so so sad to hear this news; I've lost a friend, and former teacher -- Doc taught me privately on trumpet and piano teacher from 1975-78; and he was my band director from the famous LMC European trip in 1978-ish. Doc introduced me to the wonders of the Arban book, and one of his former trumpet friends -- Doc Severinson. So many wonderful memories. He made the world a better place with his talent; and he'll be missed.

I am shocked by this. I knew Don for many years. I had him as an instructor at LMC, plus I was in the Municipal Band for a year. Even though I did not see him all that often, he always remembered me whenever he saw me. I have been in the St. Joe Encore shows since 2016, and during an evening rehearsal, one time, the Municipal Band was rehearsing at the High School. Don saw me and called my name out to say Hi. I had not seen him for over 30 years at that point. He was a Great Musician, and will truly be missed.

These are times when one should seize the golden opportunity to be expressive about the impact one has made on another's life. What I know to be true is that Mr. Doc was a former colleague at John Adams High School with whom I enjoyed communicating. On many occasions, he was reminded that the energy level he exuded everyday simply confirmed that my once insatiable desire to become a High School Music Educator was not to be! As a fellow educator, Mr. Moely was always quick to encourage and affirm my worth and value as a human being. This acknowledgement speaks volumes about his character and love for Christ. I am extremely grateful for the season that our paths were able to cross.
