Melis Rose Carlson (Lopez Delgado)
July 5, 2023
Mary,
This is Melis Rose Carlson the oldest child of Berta Delgado Alvarado and Victor Lopez, Jr.
First of all I want to express my deepest sympathy on the passing of your husband. Your family must be so proud of Greg for the wonderful man he was and all that he accomplished in his life time. We were aware of the 2 books he wrote and I have shared them with my family.
We met you and Greg at my parent´s home in Chicago when your family was living there. I also remember meeting Greg´s mother. You both attended my brother Anthony´s wedding in 1994.
It was by chance that my cousin Maria Rosa was doing research for her mother´s celebration of her 100 th anniversary of her birth in 1923. Her mother was Melis Delgado Alvarado and the last of her siblings to pass away. They were the children of Julio Delgado Morey and Isolina Alvarado. Julio was the oldest brother of Greg´s father Angel. Anyway, Maria Rosa discovered Greg´s obituary and passed the news to me.
I am retired and finally improving my Spanish so I can attempt to have good conversations with my Peruvian cousins when I visit them in Lima. I have also been delegated the family photographer. I have been collecting the old Peruvian photos over several years, sometimes just taking photos of photos. I put together a nice slideshow of my aunt Melis´
life (92 years) which includes photos from Iquitos and trips to Tarapoto. My mother and all her siblings were born in Iquitos. Their father of course was born in Tarapoto.
I also put together a slide show of my parent´s love story for the Peruvian family to see. My father died in 2012 at the age of 83 and my mother passed away in 2014 at the age of 86. I included photos of the various visits from the Peruvian family over the years. My cousin Maria Rosa met her American husband during a visit and now has been married to him for more than 30 years and lives close to me in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
Remember you fondly,
Rose

Our friendship with Greg spanned over 50 years. We shared many happy times together at Greg and Mary´s homes in Oakbrook, Long Boat Key, and Ocean City as well as holidays, weddings and birthdays. He was a great family man and along with Mary raised a wonderful family. In Greg´s own words....his life was "Spectacular" and he had so much to be proud of. Love and hugs to Mary, Frank, Scott, Kent and Rosie. We will always consider them part of our family.

As a young gyn oncologist ( many years ago now!), I looked up to Dr. Delgado and revered him as a patriarch in our specialty. I, too, trained at the MD Anderson under the renowned Felix Rutledge. Dr. Delgado's legacy in gyn onc will continue to affect generations of providers. My prayers and thoughts go out to the family and friends who are mourning. Dr. Steve Dudley

A true mentor in every sense. As fellows, we worked hard but were truly a part of the Georgetown Gyn Onc family. Greg and Mary remained interested in our careers and families long after we graduated, promoting our responsibility for health in the world and among those who cared for our patients with us. We have all suffered a great loss.

Greg was one of the very few Gyn Oncs who discussed pathology with me. He always had very interesting questions in a specialty that was not his area. He was a very smart person, I remember when, in Germany, he argued with Dr Hausen (Nobel Prize) about how to make the HPV vaccine useful to only the ones with progressive disease. Greg told me, many girls are not going to be able to pay for this, it would be easier to help a smaller number of girls. A very caring person. We will miss Greg.

Those of us who had the opportunity to know him very well know what a wonderful person he was. With a huge heart and superior intelligence, he raised a wonderful family with my dear Aunt Mary and was very kind and loving to the rest of the family. He professionally demonstrated to have an ability that cannot be compared. We have lost a great person, but we will always have him in our hearts. Rest in peace dear Uncle Gregorio.

We are shocked and saddened by Dr.Greg's passing, and are reflecting on wonderful memories with him, including fishing for grouper, annually dining at Darwin's with Mary and Greg (owner/chef hailed from the same village in the Amazon as Greg) where Dr.Greg ordered the food for us, playing golf with him, and enjoying his captivating biography "Trails from Tarapoto". He will be deeply missed.
