Dr. James Joseph O'Brien, MD, 89, of Ambler passed away peacefully on Saturday September 14, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 8, 1934 in Conshohocken he was the son of the late Edward & Eleanor (Ruch) O'Brien, and the beloved husband of Connie (DeMarco) O'Brien.
Dr. O'Brien was born and raised in Conshohocken; he attended St. Matthews High School Class of 1952, and would also serve his country proud by enlisting in the United States Army in 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1963. Dr. O'Brien was a graduate of St. Joseph's University, and the Jefferson Medical College. He would later go on to serve his residency at the Philadelphia General Hospital where he would specialize in cardiology. Soon after, Dr. O'Brien would join the Montgomery Medical Associates practice along with Dr. Carfagno, and would serve the Norristown and surrounding communities for over 35 years. Dr. O'Brien was committed to his work and the well-being of his patients, his care and compassion were unmatched. In his spare time Dr. O'Brien was an avid golfer, tennis player, and enjoyed playing bridge whenever he had the opportunity. But most of all he cherished the time he was able to spend with his family, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and a dear friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing him and he will be missed by many.
In addition to his beloved wife, Dr. O'Brien is survived by his six loving children, Debra (James) Genuardi, Mary Beth (Robert) Rebstock, James (Kathleen) O'Brien, Anthony (Rina) O'Brien, Thomas (Lori) O'Brien, and Constance (Jack) Reilly; Fifteen grandchildren, Stephanie (Patrick) Cunnane, Victoria (Dr. Daniel) Edwards, Kevin (Maureen) Genuardi, Amanda (Clive) Cooper, Robert (Erica) Rebstock, Jennifer (Shane) Holher, Christopher O'Brien, Emma O'Brien, Anthony O'Brien, Jr., Christina O'Brien, Thomas O'Brien, Jr., Alyson O'Brien, Valerie (Joshua) Spears, Steven Reilly, and Stephanie Reilly; Thirteen great grandchildren, Ella Cunnane, Owen Edwards, Kiera Genuardi, Sienna Genuardi, Emma Cooper, Chloe Cooper, Everly Rebstock, Elijah Rebstock, Elodie Rebstock, Esme Rebstock, Ethan Rebstock, Logan O'Brien, and J.J. Spears; Dr. O'Brien is also survived by his two siblings, Mary Krill, and Kathleen DeFreitas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Brandt Reilly; three siblings, Eleanor Carroll, Edward O'Brien, and Margaret Muscaro; and a son in law, Edward Pardon.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation for Dr. O'Brien on Saturday September 28, 2024 from 9:00AM - 11:00AM at the St. Helena Church, 1489 Dekalb Pike, BlueBell, PA 19422. Mass will follow the visitation at 11:00AM. Burial will take place privately at the convenience of the family in the St. Patrick's Cemetery, East Norriton.
