Dr. Robert Matthew Levy (Bobby to those closest to him), passed away peacefully on October 18, 2023, with his family around him. He was born on May 23, 1945 in
Augusta, Georgia to the late Ruth and Sam Levy, and was the younger brother of Dr. Harvey Levy of
Newton, Mass. and the late Dr. Daniel Levy of Potomac, MD. As a child he loved running through the neighborhood until dark with his friends, playing basketball behind the shul after Hebrew School, working the cash register at his parents' store and later lifeguarding at the JCC, and camping at Blue Star. He majored in English at University of Georgia, earned his MD at Medical College of Georgia, and trained in Radiology at Boston City Hospital and Interventional Radiology at Emory School of Medicine. He served two years in the Air Force, teaching Radiology residents at Wilford Hall Medical Center in
San Antonio, Texas. For nearly forty years, he relished his work at Southern Regional Medical Center and in his private practice, respected by his colleagues and patients, and adored by his techs and staff.
Bobby was totally committed to his family's well-being, and was devoted to his beloved Leslie, who ministered to him during his illness with profound love. He lived his life with honesty and integrity and was content that he lived well and provided a meaningful life for his family, who loved him deeply. Though not an extrovert, he was a keen observer with a remarkable memory for people, places and events and had an incredibly well-timed wit. Bobby was a life-long learner. He had a well-developed political awareness, loved reading books and his two or three newspapers every day and exchanging ideas about anything and everything with others, always seeing the best in people. He loved traveling and hiking in places near and far, and in the past several years, cruising to wonderful destinations with friends. After he retired, a great source of personal pleasure and satisfaction was the beautiful, park-like backyard he designed, planted and meticulously maintained. He was a champion weeder. During his rapid medical decline, he remained until the end just as he always was - kind and generous, patient and compassionate, strong, productive, disciplined, pragmatic, and always curious. These last few months, his favorite spot was under the big awning on the patio, visited by family and dear friends, enjoying the birds at the feeder and watching and listening to the waterfall.
Bobby is survived by his wife, Leslie, his two devoted sons, Alex Levy (Megan) and Dr. Jonathan Levy, and 4 loving grandchildren, Sam, Graham, Daniel and Julia Levy, his brother Harvey, and the many very special cousins, nieces and nephews who meant so much to him. He will be remembered as a beloved and loyal friend, a master mister fix-it, a trusted confidant, and for his huge smile when he saw or talked about his grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
