TANG – Ted H., M.D., 64, of Akron passed away at home on Friday, September 30, 2011 after a valiant battle with cancer. Born June 8, 1947 in Shih Chih, Taiwan, Ted was the youngest of eight siblings. He graduated from Chung-Shan Medical College in 1972, and subsequently immigrated to the United States in 1975 to fulfill his lifelong dream of practicing medicine.

Employed first by Summa Barberton Hospital during his early years, Ted later opened the doors to his own family practice in 1978. Located in Green where he remained throughout his career, he became a physician at Akron General Medical Center in 1997, when the two collaborated to continue the care of his patients.

Passionate about medicine both in and out of the office, Ted served as President of the North American Taiwanese Medical Association (Cleveland Chapter) in 2006 as well as a rotating associate professor at NEOUCOM.

Known to many, a devoted Buddhist, Ted pioneered the Buddhist Association of Wisdom and Compassion with his wife, Crystal, in 1988. Highlights of his love for missionary work include trips to several countries throughout Asia, Australia, and New Zealand with Venerable Jen Chun in addition to visits to Brazil, Buenos Aires, and Argentina with Venerable Chwan-Tao and Venerable Ji Ru.

Ted is survived by his beloved wife, Crystal Tang; two sons, Wilson Tang and Alexander Tang; and his extended family in Taiwan. Filled with kindness, compassion and generosity, which he exuded without effort, Ted will be deeply missed by all those lucky to have known him.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to his numerous physicians and caretakers.

A service will be held at 2:00 PM, on Sunday, October 9, 2011, at Hummel Funeral Home, 500 E. Exchange St., Akron, 44304. Donations may be made in Ted's memory to Summa Barberton Hospital Fund, 155 Fifth St. NE, Barberton, OH 44203; and Akron Gene

Dr. Tang was my physician for 25yrs, from the day I was born I was in his care. He was the only doctor who I felt 100% comfortable with. This was a great man and it is sad that after all of these years of taking care of people that he had to pass. God put this man here for a reason and his purpose was finished. I will be forever thankful for I would not be here today if it wasn't for Dr. Tang. Say hi to my Grandpa up there, you were his Fav doctor as well. Miss and love you Dr Tang!

He was not afraid to put his arms around you to comfort you when you were sick and scared. I've never known another doctor like him and I doubt seriously that I ever will. When I moved to NC I traveled to Ohio 2-3 times a year for two years to keep Dr. Tang as my doctor.

My mother (Lourella Wagner) met Dr. Tang many years ago when she worked at Barberton Hospital. She and my father (George Wagner) became one of Dr. Tang's first patients when he started his own pratice. Soon after, the whole family followed. We all considered Dr. Tang not only our physician, but our friend. When my father was in a terrible auto accident in the 80's, Dr. Tang even came to the house to check on him because it was so hard for my dad to get to the office. I remember how Dr. Tang cried when he told my mother and I that my dad's cancer had spread and he had a short time on this earth. He was the most caring and compassionate person we have ever known. Our hearts are sad, but we feel so fortunate to have known him. God has a better plan for him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time. You were loved by many, Rest in Peace Dr. Tang!

Crystal, Wilson, Alexander..... I first met Ted during the wonderful Carribean cruise we shared together back in 1986. Soon afterwards, he became my physician and he very quickly raised the bar for every doc I have ever interacted with. His skill, compassion, wisdom and dedication presented a most unique set of characteristics. I was also impressed to learn more of his involvements with so many causes. Ted will be sorely missed but left the world a better place for having touched it.

Dr Tang was one of the greatest men I have ever known. He had a heart for people and for life. I will cherish the memories. Dr Tang and I had a conversation a few months back -- I will never forget how thoughtful he was. He told me that the hardest day of his life was when he had to clean out his patient files and could no longer care for them...he said it was harder than being told he had cancer.

I love you doctor, friend, and caring soul...thank you for all you did for humanity.

With love -- Blessings and Peace

My heart is breaking but I am so grateful to have known Dr. Tang. Years ago, as the Coordinator for his practice, he shared his concern about a stray cat living behind his practice. Finally, after many weeks, he convinced me to take the cat home. We named her Teddie after him, and he was tickled! The care, compassion and tenderness he showed this stray exemplifies the type of man and physician he was. Dr. Tang, you will be missed. I extend my sincere sympathy to your family.
