Duncan Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2025.
Duncan Ward Smith, 87, passed away on December 22, 2024 in Seminole, Florida. He was born June 2, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island to Ralph Gordon Smith and Eleanor Owers Smith. He grew up in Providence, Rhode Island and in St. Louis, Missouri.

Duncan received a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Principia College followed by a Master's degree in Russian from Middlebury College. He began his teaching career at Harris Teachers College teaching both French and Russian. He later continued his higher education at the University of Washington, where he met Kate Kinley Gregg while living in the Russian House near campus, a residence for those wishing to immerse themselves in the Russian language to gain more fluency. They married in 1963 and had two daughters.

Duncan was a linguist having taught numerous languages including French, German, Russian, English, and Spanish throughout his career in both the U.S. and Austria where he lived for over 30 years. While teaching at the University of Alaska, he joined the Board of Directors of ANPI (Alaska Northwest Properties Inc). ANPI took over Alaska Airlines in the 1970's and brought it back from near bankruptcy, laying the foundation for the great airline it is today.

Duncan considered himself a "travelholic" having first traveled to France in 1957 on the ship Liberte, one year before the first jets crossed the Atlantic, to study in Paris and sightsee throughout Europe. This trip was the catalyst that transformed his life. He became a silver and life member of the Traveler's Century Club. Silver membership is for people who have traveled to at least 150 countries. He said he stopped counting at around 160 countries. He once bought an airline ticket around the world with stops in 17 cities he wanted to visit. He took only a bag the size of a purse which forced him to travel quickly as he had no luggage. He managed to circle the globe, including the 17 cities, in only 21 days. His lifelong goal was to see as much of the world as possible which he did by every measure.

Duncan was a genealogist at heart and was extremely proud of his Mayflower ancestry. He was descended from 20 passengers of the Mayflower including 10 signers of the Mayflower Compact. He was a member of the Mayflower Descendants in St. Louis in 1961 and later became a charter and life member, number 14, of the Mayflower Society in Alaska.

Duncan had a charismatic personality and was fun to be around. He was a fantastic storyteller and could make people laugh no matter the circumstances. He had a contagious laugh, was witty, and had a great sense of humor that made people gravitate to him. He was one of the most interesting people anyone could ever hope to meet and had an entertaining story for every occasion. He never failed to light up a room with his uniquely engaging and playful personality. He was the type of person everyone remembered and enjoyed being around.

He spent the last 20 years in Seminole, Florida which he considered, after traveling all over the world, his Shangri-la. His passing is a tremendous loss to those he left behind and he will be forever missed by those lucky enough to have known him. He is survived by his daughters Sophia Gregg Reimer (Bernard Yasuo Reimer), Consuelo Gregg Scott (Leslie Walter Scott), and his four grandchildren Nicolas Liam Reimer, Christopher Nolan Reimer, Brenna June Scott, Alexander Neal Scott, as well as his twin sister Deborah Hall. A private memorial service was held at Indian Rocks in Seminole, Florida per his wishes.

I had Mr Smith as a German teacher in Jr High in Winchester Massachusetts. He was absolutely one of my favorite teachers. His knowledge of languages was encyclopedic. His class never got boring - he was very entertaining as well. I can still remember him doing a one handed handspring on a dare. He is missed.

When I lived in Bldg 4 Duncan was my neighbor. Always friendly and talking to him he was always good for a laugh. Would perk up my day. Missed him when I moved to Bldg 30. He was a "one of a kind" and I mean that in a good way. God Bless Him.

I´m one of the lucky ones to have met and known Duncan and to have the pleasure and honour of being his winter neighbour at Seminole Gardens! I miss our chats, our laughs and especially our pool time. Duncan adored his daughters and spoke of them with such love and respect. A life well lived indeed!

Duncan was a fun and interesting resident of Building 4. He amazed us with his simple life style. We all loved his stories and sense of humor. He would never ask for anything but appreciated all of his neighbors and friends. Thank you for sharing the obituary. There were so many things we did not discover. His most important gift in life was Connie and Sophie. We certainly miss him.

We had just said yesterday at the pool, we missed seeing Duncan there. I loved being his neighbor and the stories he would tell. We also came to find out that we had ancestry connections where we both had lineage of the signers of the Mayflower Compact!! How exciting that was to share! Rest in peace Duncan and prayers to the family!

Your dad was a funny man. He used to come to Zumba classes. He always tried to keep up. I gave him lots of credit as he was the only man there. He had lots of stories to tell. I was glad to hear that he was moving to my Building 16 but he wasn´t there long. God bless you two girls, you´ve been through lots and he´s in a better place. Watching over you all.

A visit from Uncle Duncan was like having Willy Wonka pay you a visit. He was an accomplished linguist and amazingly well traveled individual. Every visit came with a story of a country or region of the world we knew very little about. Duncan was creative, fun loving, well read, well traveled and an inspiration to all of us. Because of Duncan showing us the way it inspired me to travel to China, Tibet, Nepal, Burma, Thailand and live in Alaska for 4 years. My wife and I also had the good fortune to visit him in Austria. While Duncan lived a simple life he was rich in experiences and history. He loved studying and sometimes meeting royalty - especially former Russian and English royalty. We also owe full credit to Duncan's genealogy research in discovering our Pilgrim lineage. I'm grateful to have had Uncle Duncan in my life and will remember him by his sense of adventure, energy and infectious laughter.

My condolences to my cousins, Sophie and Connie and their familes.

Uncle Duncan was that wonderful, fun, uncle who always made us laugh. Growing up I got to spend several summers with him and created lifetime memories. He loved learning and was brilliant, creative and an out of the box thinker. Here's a picture of my mom, Lovis (his older sister), and Duncan when we visited in March 2024.

Duncan Smith,
I never had the privilege of meeting him, but I sure know him. One of his daughters, Connie is my best friend. A brilliant and remarkable man, who lived life to the fullest. Please accept my deepest condolences.
