Dwight B. Newell, age 92, Leawood, KS, died peacefully July 16, 2008 at KC Hospice House. Dwight was born in Marshall, MO, the youngest of four children working the family farm until enlisting in the U.S. Air Force at the outset of WWII. He saw active duty on the island of Guam. Upon his return, he married Virginia Bernard, to whom he remained married until her death in 1998. He enjoyed a career in retail sales in Kansas City, MO. He was a licensed pilot who enjoyed flying, music, movies, animals and tinkering & fabricating in his workshop. He was a loyal friend, a devoted and caring husband, father and grandfather. He was old school; a good and decent gentleman whose word was his bond. He is survived by his son William T. Bernard, Leawood, KS; granddaughter Michelle Bitter, San Diego, CA; grandson Chris Bernard, San Francisco, CA; great- grandchildren Lauren, Kristin and Shawn Bitter, San Diego, CA; and nephew Harry Peterson, Corpus Christie, TX. Services will be private. (Arr.: Mt. Moriah & Freeman, at 816- 942-2004.)

I had the privilage to meet Dwight at the assisted living facility I worked at. He was a wonderful, talkative, knowledgable man who taught me how to play checkers (and even let me win). I will miss him.
