Aug. 8, 1928 - Feb. 12, 2008
SOUTH BEND - E. John Campbell, 79, much-loved husband, father, grandfather and friend, died at 6:15 a.m. on February 12 in his home. He successfully battled many physical illnesses with humor and an optimistic attitude until, in the Lord's time, John went to be with Him. John was born August 8, 1928 in Mishawaka to the late Ira James and Burniece (Johnston) Campbell and had lived in South Bend all his life. On November 11, 1949, he married Lois Rotzoll, who survives along with a daughter, Shelley Cataldo (Tim) of Elkhart; a son, Scott (Beth) of South Bend; three grandchildren, Matt Andrysiak of Revere, MA, and Tori and Dani Campbell of South Bend. He is also survived by a sister, Betty von Stange of Huntington, NY; and two beloved sisters-in-law, Muerle Satkowski of South Bend and Jane Campbell of Angola, IN; as well as by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Ira James Campbell and William Benjamin Campbell. John graduated in 1946 from the former Central High School and served with the U.S. Army in Japan and in the Korean Conflict, where he was wounded. He retired in 1992 after 31 years with Center Management Corp. One of John's lifetime loves was community theater, and he acted in many local productions with the Central Barnstormers, Presbyterian Players and many other groups. He was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was active as a council member, lay reader, and with the Men's Association and Friendship Circle, and in any way that he could serve the Lord. He was a member of the South Bend Lions Club, St. Joseph Lodge #45 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, Orak Shrine Temple and South Bend Shrine Club. John was generous with his time, talents and treasures to many different causes. John was so loved and admired for his courage, his sense of humor, and his dependability and devotion to his family, who will miss him greatly and cherish him always. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. today in Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 51900 Mayflower Road, South Bend, with Rev. Timothy Knauff and Rev. Russell Snyder officiating. Private family burial will be held later at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. today in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Family and friends may leave email condolences at [email protected].

John bore much fruit as he drew his resources from the evergreen life of the Lord mentioned in Hosea 14:3. Now that same Lord promises that he will answer and look after John's precious family.
