Eanswythe Shillabeer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 8 to Feb. 9, 2008.
SHILLABEER, Eanswythe Ethel August 6, 1921 ~ February 6, 2008 Passed away peacefully in Wetaskiwin, AB with her family at her side. Lovingly remembered by children John Shillabeer (Heather) of Qualicum Beach, B.C., Catherine Leonard (Dennis) of Sherwood Park, Audrey Shillabeer (Ian MacPherson) of Ma-Me-O Beach, Mary Shillabeer (Tom Matier) of Calgary; daughters-in-law Kelly Shillabeer and Maureen Louden; grandchildren Jackie Shillabeer, Heather Deering (Michael), Chris Leonard (Bonnie), Karen Sware (Derek), Denise Lucas (Geoffrey), Adam Jevne (Andrea), Luke Jevne (Lisa), and Allie Jevne-White (Trevor) Shander, Brad, Helen Dawn, Amanda and Brigitte; ten beautiful great-grandchildren; her sister Eleanore Hume of West Vancouver; nieces and nephews, dear friends; and her dog "O.G." Eanswythe was predeceased by her parents Bertram Leslie Brown and Annie Luella Sparling, husband John A. "Jack" Shillabeer, son Robert Shillabeer and sisters Mary Falconer and Joanne Brown. The youngest of four intelligent, witty, and capable sisters, Eanswythe was born in Moosomin, SK where her father was Bank Manager at the time, but largely she grew up in Vancouver, B.C. A child of The Great Depression, she diligently practised and advocated: "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle." She was a founding member of the Anti-Pollution Committee who brought paper-recycling to Wetaskiwin in 1971. Mom was a long standing member of the IODE. Reflective of her loyalty to our monarchy, her daughters were taught to curtsy for the Queen. . . just in case. Proper grammar was a pleasure and a focus, and not just in English! In all, she studied seven languages. Daily crossword puzzles were little challenge. Sundays and Christmases, mom and fine china inspired a higher level of good manners. When grandchildren came, Thanksgivings at "the lake" became the "must attend" tradition. Despite her perennial concerns otherwise, the turkey was always perfect. "Buy Canadian" was a mantra in our house, civic duty a privilege, honesty expected, swearing unheard -"Damnation!" was as bad as it got. . . once. Diversity was something to be celebrated and revered. At the kitchen table or around the fire-pit, all opinions were received and respected. Beyond work at the family's Driard Pharmacy, mom found time to manage the logistics of five children and to give to her community. She could sew and knit expertly. The latter was a great pastime in later years when she knit -and volunteered- for the Wetaskiwin Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop. Mom had a passion for animals (especially dogs), nature, the arts, and most of all, life-long learning. Books were the best gifts given or received; her extensive travels were quests for discovery and knowledge. All who knew Eanswythe Shillabeer knew a gentle woman of beauty and grace. At mom's request, there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers-and acknowledging her keen interest in history-donations may be made to the Wetaskiwin District Heritage Museum, 5007 - 50 Avenue, Wetaskiwin, AB, T9A 0S3. So sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. She was a lovely lady who always made me feel like one of the family. I retain many fond memories of the numerous visits to your homes, both in Wetaskiwin and at the lake. Who can forget how much fun it was to have a Mom in the I.O.D.E.? Please keep in touch - too many great memories still to be made!

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom. She was a fine lady. I have fond memories of the too-numerous-to-count times I spent as a guest in your homes - both in Wetaskiwin and at the lake. The way I was made to feel like family is fondly remembered. Who can forget all the fun times we had as daughters of Mom's in the I.O.D.E? Please keep in touch.

I have many fond memories of your Mom and especially of her hospitality towards me at the cabin at "the lake". She was a classy lady. My thoughts are with all of you at this time.

Eanswythe was a longtime friend and more recently a neighbour. She was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed. Our prayers and sympathies to the family.
