Ed McMahon, born on Mar 06, 1923, passed away on Jun 23, 2009.

Obituary

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ed McMahon, the loyal "Tonight Show" sidekick who bolstered boss Johnny Carson with guffaws and a resounding "H-e-e-e-e-e-ere's Johnny!" for 30 years, has died at a Los Angeles hospital. He was 86.

Publicist Howard Bragman says McMahon died early Tuesday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Bragman did not give a cause of death, saying only that McMahon had a "multitude of health problems the last few months."

McMahon had bone cancer, among other illnesses, according to a person close to the entertainer, and had been hospitalized for several weeks. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

My roommate -who was a florist, had helped decorate the McMahon home for Christmas one year. Each member of the crew was given a gift from Ed for their efforts. My roommate had traded his with another worker in order to get what he knew would be the better gift and which others turned up their noses at the idea of ...a fruitcake!
Not just any old doorstop fruitcake, no. This was McMahon Family Recipe fuitcake. This was a fruitcake that made me finally understand why fruitcakes had ever been popular. I t was a confectionary delight. It smelled of whisky and the fruit was perfect -not a single dried out or leathery piece, and each bit a perfect flavorful addition. The cake was perfect as well just sweet enough, light -yet just dense enough to buoy up the fruit and hold shape when sliced. Each Christmas since, I've always longed for an opportunity to buy another! Now, I am sadly, forced to give up on my dream. I would very much encourage the family to continue that tradition -but as a seasonal business, that they can maintain strict quality control over.
That recipe must not be lost. I will happily be glad to provide any help I can -as taster or customer, or social media devotee!

For Ed...
WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I will always remember Mr. McMahon because first words were because of him. As an infant my parents would often spend evenings with my grandparents. They would put me down to sleep upstairs at my usual bedtime and return downstairs to watch TV and visit. When it was time to go home, my mother would come up stairs to get me. This was usually after the late news. Well the next thing on after the late news was The Johnny Carson Show. Hence after hearing it so many times, my first words were "Heeerrres Johnny."

Ed's a father figure to me growing up watching the Tonight Show. I loved the Carnac the magnificant skits, with Ed handing Carson the envelopes, and getting told he was wrong..Congo breath... and the ever famous "I'm hold the last card in my hand" line always got the crowd to cheer.
He wasn't a TV personality; he was and always will be part of our life, part of our family and our history. We all lost a close relative and a great humanitarian.

I'm thinking maybe Johnny has a show in Heaven and he called Ed and told him what guests to bring! He must have gone back to the old 90 minute format because he took way too many guests for only and hour! That's enough now, guys!

(There is a 10 million dollar drawing coming up. Could you put in a good word for me?)

Seriously, though, rest well, Ed. I was always a big fan. Jerry is going to have a tough time filling your shoes on Labor Day! Thanks for all the memories of The Tonight Show, the MDA Telethon, Star Search and all the others. You were one of a kind.
