Edgar J. Lanious, Jr., 97, of Whitesboro, passed away on, June 23, 2018 at his home with his loving family by his side.
He was born on May 30, 1921 in Lancaster, PA, the son of the late Edgar J. and Susan E. (Bair) Lanious, Sr. Ed graduated from JP McCaskey High School, Lancaster, PA in 1939. Ed proudly served his country in the US NAVY from October 2, 1942 serving in the Pacific Theater on the Destroyer DD706 Gainard during the invasion of Okinawa. Ed was Honorably Discharged on October 29, 1945.
Ed completed his education at N.C. State University graduating with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, with an Aeronautical Engineering option. Ed was employed with G. E. in Binghamton, Schenectady, Brunswick, VA and Utica area [French Road and Broad Street] plants as a Mechanical, Aeronautical and finally Quality Assurance Engineer. Ed retired in May, 1983.
During a break in his military service, he returned home to marry his high school sweet heart Ruth E. Nestle on October 25th 1943. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage, exemplifying a life of true love and caring.
Ed was a very generous and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Ed enjoyed golf, playing as a member of Crystal Springs Golf Course. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, New Hartford. He enjoyed bird watching, chasing away squirrels and eating chocolate, often at the same time.
Ed was predeceased by his wife Ruth Eleanor Nestle Lanious on January 3rd 2011 and by his sister Josephine (Elwood) Shreiner in 1997.
Ed is survived by his sons, E. Joseph (Janet) Lanious III, Syracuse, NY, James (JoeyAnne) Lanious, Remsen, NY; grandsons, Eric (Maureen) Lanious, Syracuse NY, Adam (Barbara Beckingham) Lanious, Charleston, SC, James Dakota Lanious, Remsen, NY, and Logan Lanious, Remsen, NY; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Alexander and Elke, plus several nieces and nephews.
Ed's family wishes to extend their gratitude to his caregiver, Anne Terhune and Oneida County Hospice & Palliative Care for their wonderful care and compassion.
Relatives and friends are invited to visitation and may call on Monday, July 2, 2018 from 4-6 pm at Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 40 Main St., Whitesboro, NY. Funeral services will commence at the conclusion of visitation at 6 pm. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Altmar, NY at a later date.
Remembrances in Ed's name may be made to First United Methodist Church, New Hartford. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
