Edgar Thompson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 22, 2024.
Edgar Lee "Ed" Thompson died of natural causes at age 91 on June 9, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia, his home for the last 29 years. He was born in the Philips Chapel/Salem community near Graham, North Carolina, on April 30, 1933, to William Woodrow Thompson and Mary Elma Perry Thompson Bowlin. He attended Alexander Wilson School and joined the United States Air Force to complete his high school diploma and receive training in electronics and technology. He and his wife of 71 years, Jean Rogers Thompson, lived in the Swepsonville community and welcomed two daughters, Lori Thompson (Bill) McLaughlin of Hawaii and Lisa Thompson (Steve) Rubin of Atlanta. Much to their delight, Eva Jean Rubin, their grandchild of New York City, entered the family with creativity, artistic expression, and joy.

His professional life after the Air Force began at Western Electric Corporation in Burlington, NC. When Western Electric merged with AT&T, he continued with the company until his retirement in 1995. He also ran Thompson TV Repair, which utilized his gift of the ability to repair almost anything mechanical or electrical. After retirement, Ed joined Jean and Lisa in the family home furnishings business, Lisa Thompson & Associates, Inc. in Atlanta. Ed always offered friends and neighbors a helping hand with their home projects and repairs. He maintained his love of farming and planted gardens well into his retirement and was renowned for his carefully cultivated tomatoes.

His supportive brothers and sisters include Catherine Thompson (James) Kinley, both deceased; William "Ottis" Thompson, deceased, and his wife Margie; Grady Thompson and his wife Jeanne; Doris Thompson and her husband Robert; and Max Thompson and his wife Donnie, deceased. He was welcomed into the Rogers family and became an active son-in-law to Thelma and Clarence Rogers. Louise Rogers and Hurley Tate, both deceased; Betty Rogers and Bill Youngkin, deceased; Jerry Rogers, deceased and his wife Marcia shared life-long appreciation for Ed and Jean and all of each others' families.

A memorial service for Ed Thompson will be held at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church, Rev. Jason Mincey officiating, on August 3, 2024. Gifts may be made to the Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church Building Fund or the charity of your choice. Messages of condolences can be sent to the Rubins at 3830 Savannah Sq. W, Atlanta, Georgia 30340. Special thanks to Plymouth Harbor Adult Day Program and Waters Cove Senior Living.
