Edie Cowan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 15, 2025.
Edie Cowan, aged 83, passed away on May 22, 2025, in New York, NY, was born to parents Stephanie and Pincus Cohen on April 14, 1942. Edie completed her secondary education at Andrew Jackson High School and went on to attend Queens College and Butler University.

Edie is survived by her sister, Sybil Moser, and brother, Sam Cohen. She will also be fondly remembered by her nieces, Serena and Lauren Moser; nephews, Danny and Gary Cohen; great-nephews Alex and Alejandro in whom she has inspired a lasting love of theater, and so many dear cousins.

An effervescent performer and native New Yorker, Edie was a true triple threat - singing, dancing and acting on Broadway, off Broadway, movies and television, - as well as being a director and choreographer.

Her Broadway appearances include the original company of Annie in which she played several parts including Mrs. Pugh (Warbucks' housekeeper), one of radio's singing Boylan sisters; and went on several times as the floosy, Lily St. Regis. Her other Broadway credits include Sherry!, and the original production of Funny Girl.

Nationally on the road she played featured roles in several major Broadway show tours.

Her television appearances include the dance teacher on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent", a tango dancer on the TV series "Little Voice" and "The Annie Christmas TV Special". She also appeared in the film, The Intern, starring Robert DeNiro.

She choreographed the original Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors; and directed and choreographed at many regional theaters and internationally under the auspices of the State Department. For several years she was choreographer of the Inner Circle, the NYC Journalists annual amateur show and roast.

She served on the Actors Equity National Council, was a member of the Society of Choreographers and Directors and the League of Professional Theater Women.

Several years ago Edie was asked to be one of the speakers at a gala honoring the great Agnes De Mille. She ended her tribute by thanking Ms. DeMille for inspiring her to become a dancer and then a choreographer.

Edie will be deeply missed by all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and cherished memories in the hearts of her family and friends.
