Edith Beck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 5, 2021.
Edith "Edie" Ann Beck was born in Vallejo, California on July 18, 1937 to Edith and Kenneth Giant who ran a family owned jewelry store in Vallejo, California. She was a graduate of Vallejo High School and maintained many important friendships with classmates throughout her lifetime. Her class of 1955 included the late NFL great Dick Bass whose legendary exploits on the football field continue to inspire fond memories for her Vallejo classmates. After graduating high school Edie attended San Jose State University and enjoyed her association with her sorority Alpha Phi for many years. Edie had an easy manner for making new and lasting friendships throughout her life. She met and married Erling Beck while he was a student at the Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California and they moved to Ballard, Washington where she raised three children, Signe, Erik and Kari. Over time the marriage dissolved and in order to make a new life for herself Edie took night courses in court reporting in Seattle, commuting back and forth from Bainbridge Island. A court reporter friend in Port Angeles, Betty Lancaster told Edie about a job opening with the late Judge Tyler Moffett. She was offered the role and our family moved to Port Angeles, Washington. She later served under Judges Grant Meiner and George Wood before retiring. After retirement she worked as a court reporter and transcriptionist for many attorney's throughout the Olympic Peninsula, as well as a short stint as a para educator in the local school district. Edie did not know many people in Port Angeles when she first arrived, but she joined the local Jet Set Soroptimists and created lifelong friendships. She was undaunted in meeting new people and forming friendships whether they were work colleagues or casual acquaintance's. Her home on Thanksgiving Day often had up to 35 guests. Edie had a positive impact on the community. She was truly loved, admired and appreciated by the community and she absolutely loved selling Duck's for the Olympic Medical Foundation and loved the camaraderie and friendships she established. She is survived by her sister Barbara (Reggie) Fromm of Walnut Creek, CA, her cousins Cathy Azevedo of Suisun City, CA, and Georgette "Jo" (Wayne) Crutchfield of Riverside, her daughter Signe Beck Stewart (Matt Stewart) of Indio, CA, her son Erik Beck and daughter Kari Spry, grandchildren, Khalif Spry, Malik Spry, Gloria Spry and her beloved dog Y-Lee, all of Port Angeles, WA. She was preceded in death by her partner Stanley Feldman of Port Angeles, WA. Edie was a very special person to the voluminous amount of friends she made in her lifetime. It is conceivable that she did know all 18,000 residents in Port Angeles and many of them speak highly of her. She helped out where she could and often met new people with a vivacious spirit and welcoming smile. Always ready to help those in need whenever possible. On behalf of our mother, we want to thank all of those who offered kind words and phone calls. She loved each of you as much as you all have loved her. Thank you. Rest in Peace Mom. Thank you for being our Mother and role model and teaching us the importance of kindness to others. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

I first met Edie when she and her family lived on Bainbridge Island during the early 1970s. Her ex-husband and my father knew each other through their association with the maritime service. Though it was long ago, I can remember spending time with the Beck family at their log cabin home near Port Madison. My earliest memories of Edie were that of a warm and hospitable woman who went out of her way to make one feel welcome. Our families lost touch after they had moved to Port Angeles and it wasn't until 2009 that I reconnected with her through her daughter Signe. After some communication as a way of getting reacquainted, my mother and I drove to Port Angeles to visit her at her home. My mother and I had a lengthy visit with her 35 years after she and her family moved to the Olympic Peninsula. She was still the same Edie that my mother had known all those years before. It was like a reunion with a long-lost family member. My mother and Edie had thanked me for arranging that visit which was a long time in the making. I saw Edie for the last time in August 2019 shortly after the passing of her friend Stan when I was visiting Port Angeles for a tour of the city's underground. Even in her early 80's, she was still working as a court reporter and volunteering for the local schools. Getting reacquainted with her made me wish our families hadn't lost touch. I had a good rapport with her in the brief period after getting reacquainted. The world is a smaller place without her, but I can take pride that I had the chance of knowing her. My condolences to her family and those whose lives she touched. She will be missed.

I am truly saddened to hear of our good friend, Edie.
She was the kindest, sweetest woman I ever met.
When she and Stan used to visit us in Victoria, we
always had a wonderful time together. As Edie´s
favourite saying went - "What fun".
The world needs more Edies in it.
